On 4-cylinder models, the pump is located in the direction of travel to the front left of the engine and is driven by a V-belt
Warning: You cannot drive without this belt.
In models with a 5-cylinder engine, the pump is also located at the front left, but it is driven by a toothed belt.
The pump of a 6-cylinder engine is driven by the outer side surface of a toothed belt.
The water pump is maintenance-free throughout its life. If it becomes leaky or makes whistling noises, it simply needs to be replaced as it cannot be repaired.
In a 6-cylinder engine, the thermostat housing (arrow) is located in front to the right of the cylinder block.
The figure shows the installation position of the thermostat on models with a 6-cylinder engine. The air valve (arrow) should point upwards.
On 6-cylinder models, the water pump (arrow) is located in front of the cylinder block and is driven by the outer side surface of the timing belt.
Removal the water pump
You will need either a new sealing gasket (4- and 6-cylinder engines) or a new sealing ring (5-cylinder engine). A 4-cylinder car owner who purchases a new water pump receives a complete pump and housing assembly (back of the case with the pump). Pumps for 5-cylinder engines can be identified by the number 5 stamped in the area of the flange sealing gasket - they must be equipped with a sealing ring with a 5 mm diameter allowance.
When working on a 4-cylinder engine, first remove the V-belt.
Remove the timing belt guard (chapter "Engines").
Loosen a total of seven screws between the front bearing housing and the water pump housing. The pump wheel is located in the bearing housing.
Replace the gasket between the bearing housing and the water pump housing.
In the case where the entire water pump housing is removed (use of spare part), during installation, the sealing gasket between the housing and the cylinder block must also be replaced.
Tighten the bearing housing to a torque of 10 Nm, tighten the V-belt pulley clamping bolts to a torque of 25 Nm.
Removing the water pump when working on a 5-cylinder engine is not a simple job:
First you need to remove the power steering pump together with the V-belt.
Remove the timing belt guard (chapter "Engines").
Loosen the timing belt and remove it from the water pump gear.
Loosen the water pump clamp bolts and remove the pump.
Install a new pump with a new O-ring.
Tighten the water pump clamp bolts to 20 Nm.
Put on the toothed belt, be sure to check the valve timing (chapter "Engines and their inner life").
Tighten the timing belt.
The rest of the assembly goes without problems.
When working with a 6-cylinder engine, removing the water pump on your own again comes down to removing the timing belt.
Remove the poly V-belt (chapter "Generator").
Remove the timing belt (chapter "Engines").
Loosen the nine bolts on the front of the water pump housing and remove the housing.
Left: The water pump (1) of the 4-cylinder engine is located on the left front of the engine. Position (2) shows the thermostat housing cover, the arrows point to some of the water pump bearing cover mounting bolts.
Right: The water pump (arrow) of the 5-cylinder engine is located on the front of the engine and is driven by a toothed belt.
When installing, replace the sealing gasket, tighten the bolts in two passes, the last one with a torque of 10 Nm.
Put on the timing belt, be sure to check the valve timing (chapter "Engines").
