Table of contents: Removal the water pump ↓ Removal the water pump ↓
The coolant is circulated in a closed circuit by a water pump.

On a four-cylinder engine, the water pump is located in the direction of travel, in front of the engine on the left, and is driven by a V-belt.

On a six-cylinder engine, the water pump is driven by the outer side of the timing belt.

The water pump is not serviceable. If it becomes leaky or makes grinding noises, it must be replaced – repair is not possible.

The water pump on a four-cylinder engine is located on the left front of the engine.

  • 1 - flange on the drive side;
  • 2 - intermediate shaft toothed belt pulley;
  • 3 - bearing housing;
  • 4 - bracket.

4 - bracket.

The water pump (arrow) of a six-cylinder engine is located at the front of the engine block. It is driven from the back of the timing belt.

Additionally, a new gasket is used. Anyone who buys a water pump from an Audi parts warehouse for exchange receives a complete pump with housing (this is the rear part of the pump body). As a new part, Audi only supplies the separate "bearing housing", i.e. the front part of the pump with the impeller, bearing and flange. Only this unit is purchased in stores.

1. Removing the bearing housing: First remove the poly V-belt and V-belt.

2. Remove the poly V-belt tensioner.

3. Remove the upper and lower timing belt covers.

4. Remove the intermediate shaft timing belt and timing belt pulley.

5. Loosen the seven screw connections between the front bearing housing and the water pump housing. The pump wheel is located in the bearing housing.

6. Replace the gasket between the bearing housing and the water pump housing.

7. When installing, tighten the bearing housing to 10 Nm, and the water pump V-belt pulley mounting bolts to 20 Nm.

8. Apply the toothed belt, set the valve timing.

9. Removing the water pump housing assembly: the procedure is the same as described in the water pump housing section, but there is no need to remove the timing belt. This method involves removing the alternator bracket and servo pump. When installing, you also need to replace the gasket between the pump housing and the engine block.

10. Tightening torques: servo pump bracket: 25 Nm, generator bracket: 35 Nm.

In this case, it is impossible to dismantle the water pump housing on your own and, in addition, to remove the toothed belt. Therefore, first find out whether there are the necessary tools for these purposes.

1. Remove the V-ribbed belt (section Generator).

2. Remove the timing belt (chapter Engines).

3. Loosen the nine bolts at the front of the water pump housing and remove the housing.

4. When installing, replace the gasket, tighten the bolts in two stages at the end with a force of 10 Nm.

5. Apply the timing belt, be sure to check the valve timing (chapter Engines).
