With a four-cylinder engine, the water pump is located in the direction of travel ahead on the left of the engine and is driven by a V-belt.
With a six-cylinder engine, the water pump is driven by the outside of the toothed belt.
The water pump is not serviceable. If it loses its tightness or makes grinding sounds, it must be replaced - repair is not possible.
The water pump with a four-cylinder engine is located on the left in front of the engine.
- 1 - flange on the drive side;
- 2 - a pulley of a gear belt of an intermediate shaft;
- 3 - bearing housing;
- 4 - bracket.
Water pump (arrow) six-cylinder engine is located in front of the engine block. It is driven from the back of the toothed belt.

Additionally, a new gasket is used. Anyone who buys a water pump from an Audi exchange warehouse gets the pump complete with housing (This is the back of the pump housing). As a new Audi part, only a separate «bearing shell», i.e. the front of the pump with impeller, bearing and flange. In stores, they buy only this node.
1. Dismantling the bearing housing: first remove the V-ribbed and V-ribbed belts.
2. Remove the V-ribbed belt tensioner.
3. Remove the top and bottom toothed belt covers.
4. Dismantle a gear belt and a pulley of a gear belt of an intermediate shaft.
5. Loosen the seven screw connections between the front bearing housing and the water pump housing. The pump wheel is located in the bearing housing.
6. Replace gasket between bearing housing and water pump housing.
7. When installing the bearing housing, tighten it by 10 Nm, the fixing bolts of the water pump V-belt pulley by 20 Nm.
8. Apply a toothed belt, set the valve timing.
9. Disassembly of the water pump housing assembly: the procedure is the same as described in the water pump housing part, but it is not necessary to remove the toothed belt. This method involves removing the alternator bracket and servo pump. During installation, the gasket between the pump housing and the motor block must also be replaced.
10. Tightening torques: servo pump bracket: 25 Nm, alternator bracket: 35 Nm.

In this case, it is not possible to dismantle the water pump housing on your own and, in addition, remove the toothed belt. Therefore, first find out if there are the necessary tools for these purposes.
1. Remove the ribbed V-belt (chapter Generator).
2. Remove toothed belt (chapter Engines).
3. Loosen the nine bolts on the front of the water pump housing, remove the housing.
4. When mounting, replace the gasket, tighten the bolts in two steps at the end with a force of 10 Nm.
5. Apply a toothed belt, be sure to check the valve timing (chapter Engines).
