4-cylinder engines
2. Remove the alternator and drive belt as described in Section 12, Chapters 5 and 6.
3. Unscrew the pulley from the water pump drive flange (photo).

4. Loosen the clamps and disconnect the hoses from the water pump housing (photo).

5. Unscrew the nut, remove the special bolt securing the lower cover of the drive to the water pump assembly (photo).

6. Unscrew the water pump assembly from the cylinder block, remove the O-ring (photo).

7. Unscrew the bolts, remove the water pump from the casing (photo). Remove the gasket.

5-cylinder engines
8. On models equipped with power steering, remove the pump as described in Section 10, leaving the hoses tied, move it to the side.
9. Using a socket wrench, unscrew the nuts and remove the top cover of the drive.
10. Set cylinder #1 to TDC on compression stroke as described in Section 1.
11. Loosen the water pump adjustment mounting bolts, turn the water pump clockwise to reduce the tension of the timing belt.
12. Remove the toothed drive belt from the camshaft and water pump pulleys and from the intermediate gear, tie it up on one side.
13. On single overhead camshaft engines, remove the camshaft timing belt sprocket and timing belt rear cover as described in Section 1.
14. On DOHC engines, remove the rear timing belt cover as described in Section 1.
15. Remove the remaining water pump bolts, noting their locations (where is it used).
16. Remove the water pump from the cylinder block, remove the O-ring. Do not rotate the crankshaft or camshaft with the timing belt disconnected.
All engines
17. If the water pump is faulty, replace it completely, as individual parts are not accessible. Clean the mating surfaces of the water pump and housing (4-cylinder engines), or block (5-cylinder engines).
18. Reassemble in reverse order. Use a new gasket or O-ring. On 5-cylinder engines, install and tension the timing belt as described in 1 Section. Fill the cooling system as described in Chapter 5. Tighten the alternator and power steering pump drive belts as described in Sections 12 and 10 respectively.
