1. It is preferable to drain the cooling system when the engine is cold. If this is not possible, place a cloth over the expansion tank filler cap, slowly loosen the cap and allow the pressure to escape. See warning in Chapter 1.
2. Prepare a suitable container to drain the cooled liquid into.
4-cylinder engines
3. Disconnect the lower hose and the bypass hose from the thermostat and water pump housing on the left side of the engine (photo). Alternatively, unscrew the thermostat cover and remove the thermostat.



5-cylinder engines
4. Disconnect the heater supply hose from the outlet on the rear of the cylinder block.
5. Disconnect the lower hose from the front of the radiator (photo).

6. Remove the thermostat (Chapter 2), or disconnect the short hose running from the coolant pipe to the block inlet connection on the left side of the engine (photo).
