1. On 4-cylinder engines, the thermostat is located at the base of the water pump housing, and on 5-cylinder engines, behind the water pump on the left side of the cylinder block.
2 Before removing the thermostat, drain the cooling system as described in Chapter 3.
3. Unscrew and remove the thermostat cover, remove the O-ring (photo).
4. Remove the thermostat from the casing (photo).
5. To check if the block is serviceable, lower it with twine into a container of water. Gradually heat the water and note the temperature at which the thermostat will start to open and at which it will fully open. Remove the thermostat from the water and check that it closes completely when it cools down. Replace the thermostat if it does not work according to the information given in the Specifications.
6. Clean the surfaces of the thermostat housing and cover.
7. Position the thermostat in the casing. On 4-cylinder engines, the arrow on the cross section should point away from the engine, and on 5-cylinder engines, the arrow should point down.
8. Position the new O-ring on the thermostat or cover, then install the thermostat cover, tighten the bolts to the specified torque specification.
9. Fill the cooling system as described in chapter 5.
