Thermostat — removal, inspection and installation


1. On 4 - cylinder engines, the thermostat is located at the base of the water pump housing, and on 5 - cylinder engines, behind the water pump on the left side of the cylinder block.

2 Before removing the thermostat, drain the cooling system as described in Chapter 3.

3. Unscrew and remove the thermostat cover, remove the O-ring (photo).

5. To check if the unit is serviceable, lower it by a string into a container of water. Heat the water gradually and note the temperature at which the thermostat begins to open and at which it opens completely. Remove the thermostat from the water and check that it closes completely when it cools. Replace the thermostat if it does not operate according to the information given in the Specifications.

6. Clean the surfaces of the thermostat housing and cover.

7. Position the thermostat in the housing. On 4-cylinder engines, the arrow on the cross section should point away from the engine, and on 5-cylinder engines, the arrow should point down.

8. Position the new O-ring on the thermostat or cover, then install the thermostat cover, tighten the bolts to the specified torque Specification.

9. Fill the cooling system as described in Chapter 5.
