1. Whenever the coolant is drained from the cooling system, it should be flushed with clean water to remove any rust, scale or sediment build-up. If the coolant has not been changed regularly, there may be a serious build-up of sediment and a back flush will be required to clean the system.
2. Drain the cooling system as described in Chapter 3.
3. Disconnect the top hose from the radiator, then insert the water hose into the radiator, run water through the radiator until it flows out clean from the base of the radiator.
4. Insert the hose into the expansion tank, and let the water flow through the supply hose.
5. Insert the hose into the upper hose, run water through the cylinder head and block.
6. In cases of severe contamination, remove the radiator, turn it upside down, and run water until it flows out clean from the upper hose outlet.
7. To flush the heater, disconnect the hoses in the bulkhead and insert a water hose.
8. If after a reasonable period of time the water still comes out dirty, the system can be flushed with a cleaning agent.
