1. Whenever fluid is drained from the cooling system, it must be flushed with clean water to remove any accumulation of rust, scale or sediment. the fluid has not been changed regularly, there may be serious sediment buildup and a backflush will be required to clean the system.
2. Drain the cooling system as described in Chapter 3.
3. Disconnect the top hose from the radiator, then insert the water hose into the radiator, run water through the radiator until it flows clean from the base of the radiator.
4. Insert the hose into the expansion tank, run water through the supply hose.
5. Insert the hose into the top hose, run water through the cylinder head and block.
6. In cases of serious contamination, remove the radiator, turn it over, and let the water flow until it flows clean from the top hose connection.
7. To flush the heater, disconnect the hoses in the baffle, insert the water hose.
8. If, after a reasonable period of time, water flows out, the still dirty system can be flushed with a cleaning agent.
