1. On 5-cylinder models, remove the plastic cover in front of the radiator.

2. Guided by Chapter 3, paragraph 2, disconnect the negative battery cable.

3. Loosen the generator pivot and adjustment axis bolts and turn the generator towards the engine.

4. On models with air conditioning and power steering, before removing the alternator drive belt, you will first need to remove the drive belts that connect them.

5. Remove the drive belt from the pulleys.

6. Install the new drive belt onto the pulleys.

7. There are two methods to tension the drive belt. The first method is to turn the tensioner rack nut, move the generator away from the engine until the drive belt only deflects about 2.0 mm by pressing the thumb in the middle between the pulleys. If the drive belt is installed, the deflection should be 5.0 mm. Tighten the tensioner rack nuts in this position, then tighten the adjustment bolt, pivot bolt and linkage mounting bolts (photo).

8. The second method requires a torque wrench. First check that the pivot bolt is loose and that the alternator moves freely.

Tighten the tensioner rack nut to a torque of 9.0±1.0 Nm and mark the position of the generator relative to the adjusting link.

Tighten the pivot bolt and check that the rack nut remains in the same position. If necessary, re-adjust the nut using a double-ended wrench. Tighten the adjustment bolt and, if necessary, the link bolt.
