With a six-cylinder engine, the water pump is driven by a toothed belt - everything should be fine here.
The situation is different with a four-cylinder engine: this engine should never be started without a V-belt and therefore without a water pump drive! Otherwise, you risk serious engine damage.
Cold water is heavier than hot water. Even without a water pump, it slowly circulates through the engine and radiator. This thermosiphon and self-circulating cooling is not sufficient for modern engines. More detailed information is placed in the section Generator.
