Alternator V-Belt Pre-August 91: Loosen clamp bolt on alternator adjuster bar.
Turn the adjusting nut with toothed ring below until the correct belt tension is established.
Tighten the clamp bolt.
If the generator cannot be moved, then its hinge bolt must be loosened.
It becomes accessible from the front after removing the timing belt cover.
If the pivot bolt has been loosened, it should be the last thing to be tightened.
Alternator V-belt from September 91: Loosen the clamp bolt on the alternator mounting bracket.
Loosen the pivot bolt at the bottom of the generator and check for smooth running.
Tighten to 6 Nm and hold the adjusting nut with the toothed ring using a 22 mm open-end wrench with a torque head. This will ensure that the belt tension is correct for the new belt installed.
Tighten the clamp bolt.
If you need to check the tension of the old alternator belt, tighten the nut to a torque of 4 Nm.
Lastly, tighten the hinge bolt again.
V-belt for water pump and power steering pump: remove the lower engine compartment protection (chapter "Body elements").
Loosen the clamp bolt on the power steering pump mounting bracket.
Turn the adjusting nut with toothed ring below until the correct belt tension is established.
Tighten the clamp bolt.
If the power steering pump cannot be moved, then its pivot bolt must be loosened.
Air Conditioning Compressor V-Belt: Belt tension adjustment is accomplished by removing or adding adjusting washers between the front and rear halves of the pulley.
More shims between the pulley halves means less belt tension.
Fewer shims between the pulley halves results in greater belt tension.
Extra shims should be placed between the hub and the front half of the pulley.
Tighten the nuts to a torque of 25 Nm, making sure that the V-belt does not become jammed between the pulley halves.
Turn the crankshaft twice.
Check the belt tension by pressing firmly with your thumb on the free space between the crankshaft and the air conditioning compressor.
Start the engine and let it run for a while.
Check the V-belt tension again and add or remove adjusting washers if necessary.
When the belt tension is correct, tighten the bolts again to 25 Nm.
Models with 5- and 6-cylinder engines
The tension of the poly V-belt is provided by a tension roller loaded with spring force. No adjustment is required.
If the spring is broken, the belt hangs freely over the pulleys. In this case, the tensioner should be replaced.
