TO No.13
A belt that is too tight can stretch, which damages its rubberized fabric.
By applying moderate pressure with your thumb on the V-belt, you can push it between the two pulleys as follows:
If a new V-belt is installed, its tension should be checked after approximately 100 km and tightened if necessary; new belts stretch more at first.
Tensioning the poly V-belt
The poly V-belt of the 4-cylinder engine of the model produced since September 91 will have to be re-tensioned during inspection. So you need to loosen the belt and set the tension according to the diagram described in the next paragraph.
Tensioning the V-belt of a 4-cylinder engine:
Left: Power steering pump V-belt.
1 - clamp bolt;
2 - adjusting nut with toothed rim.
3 - safety bolt;
Right: alternator V-belt.
1 - Adjusting nut with toothed crown;
2 - clamp bolt;
3 - adjustment bar.
The poly V-belt of the 5- and 6-cylinder engines always has the correct tension thanks to the automatic tensioner.
