2. Drive belts, sometimes referred to as V-belts or simply fan belts, are located at the front of the engine and play an important role in the operation of the vehicle and its individual components. Due to the characteristics of the material and operating conditions, drive belts fail after a while, and therefore their condition should be checked and tensioned periodically to avoid serious damage to the engine.
3. Drive belts are used to drive the generator, steering pump, water pump and air conditioning compressor. Depending on the location of the pulleys, one belt can drive several components at once.
4. Turn off the engine, put the manual transmission in neutral. Raise and place the car on stands.
5. Remove the bottom cover of the engine compartment, refer to subsection Removal and installation of the bottom cover of an impellent compartment.
6. Mark the belt -1- with chalk in a clearly visible place.
7. From the underside of the engine, use the socket to turn the engine by the crankshaft pulley in the direction of rotation, i.e. to the right so that the chalk markings are visible. At the same time, view the belt section by section.
Edge wear of ribbed belt
Transverse cracks D on the reverse side of the belt and detachment of the ribs E of the ribbed belt
Flaking of side ribs F, cracks H and delamination of side ribs G
Rib separation J, cracks K
8. fingers (and using a flashlight if necessary) walk along the entire length of the belt, feeling for cracks and delaminations. Also check the belt for scuffs and polished areas. The belt must be inspected from both sides, which means that it must be twisted to check the condition of the wrong side.
9. The tension of the belt is checked by firmly pressing on it with your thumb and determining the degree of its deflection. Measure the deflection with a ruler. If the distance between the centers of the pulleys is from 180 to 280 mm, then the amount of deflection should be 6 mm. If the distance between the centers of the pulleys is between 300 and 400 mm, the deflection should be 13 mm.
10. If one or more of the indicated damages is present, the V-belt must be replaced with a new one, refer to subsections Removing and installing ribbed V-belt And Removing and installing the V-belt.
11. Install the engine compartment side cover.
