1. Install the remaining engine components in the order shown in Chapter 11 of this Section. Install the engine in the vehicle as described in Chapter 4. Check the engine oil and coolant levels and double-check that all wires and hoses are connected. Make sure there are no tools or rags left in the engine compartment.
2. Disconnect the fuel shut-off valve wire on the high-pressure fuel pump (see Section 3A).
3. Turn the crankshaft with the starter until the oil pressure indicator lamp goes out.
4. If the light does not go out after a few seconds of cranking, check the engine oil level and the tightness of the oil filter. If everything is OK, check the wiring of the oil pressure sensor. Do not take further action until you are sure that oil is supplied to the engine under sufficient pressure.
5. Connect the fuel shut-off valve wire.
6. Start the engine. It may take a few seconds for the fuel system to build pressure, but the engine should start easily.
7. Allow the engine to idle and check for fuel, coolant and oil leaks. When first started, smoke and a burning smell may appear due to burning lubricants.
8. Let the engine idle until hot coolant flows through the upper hose.
9. Check the injection timing and idle speed adjustment as described in Section 3A.
10. After waiting a few minutes, recheck the oil and coolant levels and top them up if necessary.
11. Tighten the cylinder head mounting bolts
12. If new pistons, rings or crankshaft bearings have been installed, the engine needs to be run in. For the first 1000 km of run, do not turn on full throttle and do not overload the engine at low speeds. After the break-in period, it is recommended to change the oil and filter.
