General instructions

Warnings: There is a risk of poisoning when running the engine in a closed area!

Before starting the engine, the manual transmission shift lever must be in neutral position (the automatic transmission selector must be in position R or N), parking brake included.

On a car with a manual transmission, press the clutch pedal when starting the engine - the starter should rotate only the engine crankshaft.

As soon as the engine starts running, you must immediately release the ignition key - the starter should not rotate together with the engine flywheel.

Starting a cold engine is accompanied by increased noise for a short time, since the oil pressure in the hydraulic valve clearance compensators has not reached the required value. This is normal.

Do not allow a warm engine to run while parked.

Until the engine has warmed up to normal operating temperature, do not allow high engine speeds or heavy engine loads.

When towing vehicles with a catalytic converter, stop trying to start the engine if the distance traveled by the towed vehicle exceeds 50 m. Unburned fuel may enter the catalytic converter and damage it.

Before attempting to start the engine by towing, you should try to jump start it using another vehicle's battery.

Petrol engines

These engines are equipped with a fuel injection system that automatically ensures the optimum fuel-air ratio at any ambient temperature.

Before starting a cold or warm engine and during starting, do not press the accelerator pedal.

If the engine fails to start after 10 seconds, try again after 30 seconds.

If the engine still does not start, check the fuel pump electric motor fuse.

After starting a very hot engine, let it run for a while at medium speed.

Diesel engines

After switching on the "Ignition on" position while driving, the control lamp, depending on the engine coolant temperature, may signal the need for pre-heating.

Cold engine start

At ambient temperature above +5°C the engine can be started immediately without pre-heating. During starting, do not press the accelerator pedal.

At ambient temperatures below +5°Cturn the ignition key to position 2 – the pre-heating indicator lamp will light. The lamp will go out after reaching a temperature sufficient for fuel ignition.

When the pre-heating is switched on, all other large current consumers must be switched off - otherwise the battery will be overloaded with high current.

Immediately after the indicator lamp goes out, start the engine.

Do not press the accelerator pedal while starting.

If the engine does not ignite steadily, allow the starter to run for a few more seconds (no more than 30 sec), until the engine can run on its own.

If the engine does not start, turn on the preheater again and try to start the engine as described above. If the engine still does not start, check the preheater fuse.

Starting the engine when it is warmed up to operating temperature

The pre-heating indicator lamp does not light – the engine can be started.

Starting the engine after running out of fuel from the fuel tank

If the fuel in the tank of a vehicle with a diesel engine is completely used up, the process of starting the engine after refueling may take longer than usual – up to 1 minute, since the fuel supply system is freed from air in it only during the process of starting the engine.

Engine stop

After a high, prolonged load on the engine, do not turn it off immediately – let the engine idle for 2 minutes to avoid a sharp temperature drop in its various parts.

Warnings: After the engine has stopped, the fan may continue to rotate for a long time (up to 10 minutes) even with the ignition off. The fan may also suddenly turn on after some time:

  • when the coolant temperature rises due to the presence of a greater temperature difference in different parts of the engine;
  • on a hot engine when the temperature in the engine compartment rises in the sun.

Therefore, when carrying out work in the engine compartment, be especially careful!
