Removal the rear shock absorber strut. Front-wheel drive models without ground clearance adjustment
Purchase self-locking nuts for the upper and lower fastenings.
Raise the vehicle on both sides.
Ensure that the vehicle is secured.
Remove the wheel.
Place a support under the axle on the side from which the shock absorber strut will be removed, and at the same time raise the axle by approximately 10 mm.
Loosen the lower mounting bolt on the shock absorber strut.
Loosen the three upper mounting bolts on the shock absorber strut, while holding the strut.
Remove the shock absorber strut.
Loosen the lower shock absorber mount.
Raise the rear axle so that the upper mounting nuts can be tightened (25 Nm).
Lower the vehicle to the ground with all four wheels.
Only now tighten the lower mounting bolt of the shock absorber strut to a torque of 95 Nm. Otherwise, the rubber-metal bushings may become warped.
Removal the rear shock absorber. All-wheel drive models
Raise the car.
Secure the raised vehicle.
Remove the wheel.
Place a support under the suspension arm on the side from which the shock absorber strut will be removed.
Remove the lower mounting bolt on the shock absorber strut.
Loosen the three upper mounting bolts on the shock absorber strut. Hold the strut in place so that the entire rear axle suspension does not hit the inside of the fender.
Remove the wishbone mounting bolt at the top of the shock absorber.
Remove the shock absorber strut.
When installing, loosely place the lower mount of the shock absorber strut, while replacing the self-locking nut and bolts.
Tighten the upper shock absorber strut bolts (55 Nm).
Loosely screw in the upper wishbone mounting bolt, and replace the bolt and self-locking nut here as well.
Lower the car to the ground with all four wheels. If you tighten the wheel suspension bolts on a raised car, the rubber-metal bushings will become warped.
Only now tighten the lower shock absorber strut mounting nut to a torque of 90 Nm and finally turn it another ¼ turn (90°).
Tighten the nut of the upper wishbone mounting bolt to a torque of 70 Nm and finally turn it another ½ turn (180°).
Removal the rear shock absorbers
In the Audi 100, the shock absorber is separated from the removed shock absorber strut using a spring tensioner. This is easy to do. It becomes more difficult during installation: the angle of the lower shock absorber mount to the upper shock absorber mount must be exactly the same when installed. Without the VAG 1752 installation template, which the Audi workshop uses, it is almost impossible to install it so precisely. Our advice to those who do not want to hand over all the work to the workshop: you can simply remove the shock absorber strut, ask the workshop to install the shock absorber precisely, and then reinstall the shock absorber strut at home. Before replacing the shock absorbers, you should determine which chassis is installed on your car. Only then will you be able to order the necessary shock absorbers. This can be found out from the vehicle data carrier - a plate pasted in the spare wheel niche under the mat. The marking means:
- 1BA - serial version
- 1BE - sports version
- 1BB - performance for bad roads
Note: Shock absorbers must always stand vertically. When lying down, shock absorber fluid flows into the upper part of the damper, which can cause the shock absorber to knock. The reverse flow of oil is achieved only by standing the shock absorber vertically for 24 hours with the piston rod fully extended at room temperature.
