Removing the rear shock absorber. Front wheel drive models without ride height control
Purchase self-locking top and bottom mounting nuts.
Raise the vehicle on both sides.
Secure the vehicle.
Remove wheel.
Place a support under the axle on the side from which the suspension strut will be removed, and at the same time raise the axle by about 10 mm.
Loosen the lower mounting bolt on the suspension strut.
Loosen the top three mounting bolts on the suspension strut. At the same time, hold the stand.
Remove shock absorber.
Loosely install the lower suspension strut mount.
Raise the rear axle so that the upper mounting nuts can be tightened (25 Nm).
Lower the vehicle to the ground with all four wheels.
Only now tighten the lower suspension strut mounting bolt to 95 Nm. Otherwise, rubber-metal bushings may be distorted.
Removing the rear shock absorber. All-wheel drive models
Raise the vehicle.
Secure raised vehicle.
Remove wheel.
Place a support under the control arm on the side from which the suspension strut will be removed.
Unscrew the lower fixing bolt on the suspension strut.
Loosen the top three mounting bolts on the suspension strut. At the same time, hold the rack so that the entire rear axle suspension does not hit the wing from the inside.
Remove the transverse arm mounting bolt at the top of the suspension strut.
Remove shock absorber.
When installing, freely install the lower suspension strut mount, while replacing the self-locking nut and bolts.
Tighten the upper suspension strut bolts (55 Nm).
Loosely screw in the fixing bolt of the upper control arm, here also replace the bolt and the self-locking nut.
Lower the vehicle to the ground with all four wheels. If you tighten the wheel suspension bolts on a raised vehicle, then the rubber-metal bushings will warp.
Only now tighten the lower mounting nut of the suspension strut to 90 Nm and finally turn it another ¼ turn (90°).
Tighten the nut of the fixing bolt of the upper control arm to 70 Nm and finally turn it a further ½ turn (180°).
Removing the rear shock absorbers
In the Audi-100, the shock absorber is separated from the removed suspension strut using a spring tensioner. This is easy to do. It gets harder during installation: the angle of the lower shock absorber mount to the upper shock mount must be exactly the same when installed. Without the installation template VAG 1752, which is used by the Audi workshop, it is almost impossible to install it so accurately. Our advice to those who do not want to leave all the work to the workshop: you can simply remove the shock strut, ask the workshop to accurately install the shock absorber and then reinstall the shock strut at home. Before replacing the shock absorbers, you should determine which running gear is installed on your car. Only in this case, you can order the right shock absorbers. This can be recognized from the vehicle data carrier, a plate affixed to the spare wheel well under the floor mat. Marking means:
- 1VA - standard version
- 1BE - sports version
- 1BB - performance for bad roads
Note: The shock absorbers must always be vertical. When lying down, shock absorber fluid enters the upper area of the damper, and this can cause shock absorber knocks. The reverse flow of oil is only achieved by placing the shock absorber vertically for 24 hours with the piston rod fully extended at room temperature.
