Attention! Rear suspension strut disassembly requires a compressor to compress the springs (spring spreader). Be careful even with a compressor - the spring is compressed with great force and can shoot.
1. After removing the rack, clean it of any dirt and clamp it in a vise with soft (aluminum or wood) sponges so as not to damage the bottom support of the rack. Apply alignment marks between the strut mounts, spring and damper body to facilitate reassembly.
2. Install the spring compressors and compress the spring. so that the lower coil moves away from the support cup (pic. 12.2).
3. Remove the plastic cap along with the O-ring (pic. 12.3).
4. Loosen the nut on top of the post while holding the stem with a hex wrench (pic. 12.4).
5. After unscrewing the nut, remove the Belleville washer, bearing, upper spring cup and support (pic. 12.5, a-g).
6. Remove bushing (if provided), bearing ring, bottom washer and ring. Remove the baffle with the bottom ring and plastic covers with a protective cap. Remove the spring with compressors, remove the ring and the lower spring seat from the shock absorber body (pic. 12.6, a-c).
7 Check the damper for leaks. Check for wear or other damage to the stem along its entire length and for corrosion or other damage to the shock absorber body. Holding the shock absorber vertically, check the performance of the shock absorber, pass the rod up and down for a full stroke, then for short strokes of 50... 100 mm. In both cases, the resistance to movement must be soft and continuous. If the stem moves unevenly or is damaged, a replacement is necessary.
Attention: Shock absorbers are replaced in pairs of more than one axle, in order to maintain suspension characteristics. Different cars are installed on different models - the purchased shock absorbers must be suitable for your model.
8. Inspect all rack components and replace defective ones.
9. Install the lower spring cup with ring, making sure that the stops for the spring are installed at an angle of 90°to the axis of the lower strut mounting bolt.
10. Put the protective cap on the shock absorber rod, then the plastic anthers, the bottom ring, the bump stop, the thrust ring, the bottom washer, the bearing ring and the bushing.
11. Install the compressed spring on the lower support cup. At the same time, make sure that the end of the lower coil of the spring rests against the protrusion on the spring support (pic. 12.11).
12. Lubricate the upper spring seat with talc and install it on the upper coil of the spring, resting its end against the support ledge (label "Federanfang") (fig.12.12).
13. Install the top support cup, following the previously marked marks. The holes for the upper support bolts were at an angle of 45°to the axis of the lower mounting bolt. Make sure that the nuts welded on the bottom of the cup fit into the corresponding recesses in the spring support (pic. 12.13, a, b).
14. Install the bearing, then the Belleville washer. Install a new gasket on the top spring cup.
15. Fully extend the shock absorber rod and screw on a new rod nut. Using the method used for removal, while holding the stem, tighten the nut to the prescribed torque.
16. Make sure the assembly is properly assembled (both ends of the spring must rest against the protrusions on the supports).
17. Press the cap in the master as far as possible into place in the upper spring cup. The cross lugs must be installed perpendicular to the axis of the bottom strut mounting bolt (see fig. 12.13, a).
18. Once again make sure that the rack is assembled correctly and carefully remove the spring compressors.
19. Install the stand on the vehicle as described in paragraph 11.
20. Install the stand on the vehicle as described in paragraph 3.
