Park the car on a level surface.
After turning off the engine when it is warm, wait at least five minutes for all the oil to drain into the oil pan. It is best to check before starting when the engine is still cold.
Pull out the oil dipstick (with a hot engine, be careful, closely spaced coolant hoses are very hot), wipe the dipstick with a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel. Insert again until it stops, wait a bit and pull it out again.
Use the dipstick to determine the oil level, which should be between the two marks.
If the oil level only reaches the lower mark, add 1 liter.
Topping up oil
The amount of oil between the upper and lower marks is 1 liter. The oil level should not fall below the lower mark, although the lack of a quarter liter is not yet dangerous for the engine.
If more oil is not available and the vehicle is in motion, the oil pressure may drop to a dangerous level, which will be immediately signaled by the dynamic oil pressure control system with a control buzzer.
Too much oil in the engine is also undesirable. At high speeds, it enters the air filter through the crankcase ventilation system and contaminates the paper filter element (carbureted engines).
With a moderate driving mode, it is enough to add oil to the lower mark.
When driving at high speed, it is recommended to add oil so that its level is in the lower quarter between the two marks on the dipstick. A little more oil will provide better cooling.
The engine will not benefit if you fill the oil above the top mark. At high speeds, oil will enter the air filter or intake system through the crankcase ventilation system.
Can different brands of oils be mixed?
Oils of various brands can be mixed, including seasonal oils with multigrade oils. It is important that the oil used is of the correct type.
Oil consumption
Part of the oil burns during operation. Thus. oil consumption is natural. A well-run engine should consume 0.2 liters of oil for every 1000 km. For an Audi car, the maximum allowable consumption is 1.5 liters per 1000 km.
Watch quality
Oil types recommended for Audi
With relatively long oil change intervals (with a run of 15,000 km or more) there is a risk of oil foaming, therefore the recommendations of Audi must be followed.
The recommended motor oil should be mineral based and meet the VW 50101 standard. This oil has the necessary anti-foam properties. Synthetic oils with crumb anti-friction properties reduce internal friction in the engine. They must comply with the VW 50000 standard.
Only in the event that there is no oil of the specified type, you can use seasonal or all-weather oil of the category "API SF" or "API SG". Previously, oil could be filled, which, according to the API standard (American Petroleum Jnsfifute) marked with the letters SF or SG. This designation may also be preceded by the designation of the association of European car manufacturers (SS MS) or the US military (MIL). The use of oils CCMC-G3 or MIL-L-46152B is acceptable, however, these brands of oils can be used for topping up only as a last resort.
The following are guidelines for selecting the correct grade of oil. The oil must be:
- Required type. The absence of a label on the packaging is very rare.
- Required viscosity. It depends on the prevailing air temperatures and can be determined from the graph below.
- Other factors such as the price of the oil and the name of the manufacturer say nothing about the quality of the oil.
Graph of oil viscosity versus temperature
A - All-weather oil.
B - Synthetic oil according to VW 50000 standard.
C - Seasonal oil The indicated temperatures are the prevailing air temperatures. Short-term fluctuations do not play a role.
Engine oil additives
The use of additives, no matter what grade, in lubricating oils leads to disruption of operation and can lead to undesirable mixture composition. This opinion firms VW / Audi. The use of oils with additives that extend their service life is questionable, especially when using oils for severe operating conditions.
