To loosen the oil filler plug, use the VW 3357 socket wrench (Fig. 2–18).

For topping up, use oil G 052 911 SAE 75W–90.

Place the vehicle on a lift in a horizontal position.

Remove the lower engine splash shield.

Unscrew the oil filler plug from the gearbox, which is located in front of the left drive shaft and may be covered by the drive shaft heat shield (Fig. 2–19, 2–20).

Check the oil level with a bent wire.

In a five-speed gearbox 012 of a front-wheel drive vehicle, it should be located 7 mm from the lower edge of the threaded hole.

In the six-speed gearbox 01E and five-speed gearbox 01A of a front-wheel drive vehicle, it should be located at the lower edge of the threaded hole.

The oil level in the six-speed gearbox 01E of a four-wheel drive vehicle should be 1 mm from the lower edge of the threaded hole.

If necessary, add oil through the oil filler hole.

Screw in the plug and tighten it to a torque of 25 Nm for gearbox 012 and 01A, 40 Nm for gearbox 01E.
