To loosen the oil filler screw, use a socket wrench VW 3357 (pic. 2–18).
Use oil G 052 911 SAE 75W–90 for topping up.
Place the vehicle on a lift in a horizontal position.
Remove the lower engine mudguard.

Unscrew the oil filler plug from the gearbox, which is located in front of the left drive shaft and can be covered by the drive shaft heat shield (pic. 2–19, 2–20).
Check the oil level with a bent wire.
In a five-speed gearbox 012 in a front-wheel drive vehicle, it should be 7 mm from the bottom edge of the threaded hole.
In a 6-speed 01E gearbox and a 5-speed 01A gearbox in a front-wheel drive vehicle, it must be at the lower edge of the threaded hole.
The oil level in a six-speed gearbox 01E of a four-wheel drive vehicle should be 1 mm from the bottom edge of the threaded hole.
If necessary, add oil through the oil filler hole.
Screw in the plug and tighten it to 25 Nm for 012 and 01A gearboxes, 40 Nm for 01E gearboxes.
