When checking, the temperature of the transmission oil should be slightly below +35°C, which is reached a short time after the engine is started. To determine the temperature, the VW diagnostic equipment must be connected to the connector. Otherwise, the temperature can only be determined approximately.
Protective goggles must be worn when checking.

Change of oil
Install the pallet VAG 1306 under the gearbox.

Unscrew plug 2 (pic. 2–21, 2–22) drain hole and drain the oil from the gearbox.
Screw in the plug 2 with a new gasket and tighten it to 40 Nm.
Unscrew plug 1 of the oil filler hole.
Hang a VAG 1924 container with G 052 162 A oil above the gearbox, for example at the level of the radiator grille.
Pour oil from the VAG 1924 container up to the lower edge of the oil filler hole.
Start the engine at idle and add oil up to the bottom edge of the oil filler hole.
Remove the VAG 1924 container, screw the plug into the oil filler hole and tighten it by hand.
When the engine is idling, press the brake pedal and move the selector lever alternately to all positions with a delay in each position of 2-3 seconds.
Switch off the ignition.
Check the oil level in the automatic transmission.
Checking the oil level
It is necessary to check the oil level with the car in a horizontal position, with the gearbox warmed up to a temperature of 30°C, and the selector lever in the position P. The air conditioner and heating system must be turned off.
Connect the device VAG 1551 for reading faults.
Start the engine at idle and check the temperature of the gearbox, which should not exceed 30°C.
At an automatic transmission temperature of +35 to +40°C, unscrew the screw plug 1 of the oil filler hole (see fig. 2–21). The oil level is normal if the oil leaks slightly to the outside (as a result of an increase in the level when heated).
If the level is low, add oil to the oil filler hole.
Screw the plug into the oil filler hole and tighten it to 60 Nm.
Checking the condition of the oil
When checking the oil level in an automatic transmission, also check the condition of the oil. Compare it for color, smell and viscosity with new oil.
If the gearbox oil is dark or almost black with a burnt smell, the gearbox friction linings are worn out.
If the oil in the gearbox is milky, it means that water has got into it. This can happen when the car is constantly used for short trips. If the color of the oil does not change after a long drive, the oil needs to be changed.
The oil may become dark brown and sticky to the touch due to overheating of the transmission or too high a level in the transmission. If the oil change does not work, you must contact a specialized workshop.
If, when checking the oil level or changing the oil in an automatic transmission, dirt particles or metal chips are found in the oil, it is necessary to diagnose or repair the automatic transmission at a specialized service station.
