A synthetic fluid, the English name is Automatic Transmission Fluid, is poured into the automatic transmission. It serves as a lubricant and a means of controlling the transmission. ATF must have Audi approval, and Audi allows the use of only ATF with the designation ESSO LT 71141. In the spare parts warehouse, this ATF is offered under the part number G052 152 162 A1 or A2.
Unlike previous models, the A4 does not have a dipstick for measuring the ATF level. Today, checking the ATF level has become a lengthy procedure carried out in the workshop, which can only be done with the VAG 1551 fault reader for memory, only it can determine the exact temperature of the oil in the gearbox. This is crucial for the correct oil level, since ATF expands greatly under the influence of temperature.
Therefore, the ATF level check is only carried out in a workshop. The fluid level is checked only every 30,000 km. Exception: a heavily oiled gearbox housing calls for an early check!
