The threaded oil drain plug (3) – the photo shows a six-cylinder engine – is only accessible after removing the lower engine compartment trim. The most suitable tool for unscrewing it is a socket wrench. The oil filter (1) is best unscrewed with a strap wrench (by the arrow). The photograph below shows the oil radiator through which the coolant flows (2).
Execution order
1. Change the oil only when the engine is warm! Therefore, if possible, drive the car.
2. Raise the Audi A4 horizontally (put the stops in place!) or install it on a ramp.
3. Remove the lower engine compartment cover.
4. Place a suitable container under the engine crankcase.
5. Unscrew the drain plug with a spanner; let the oil drain. Be careful, it is hot.
6. If you have lifted the car only at the front, then in order to drain the used oil completely, you need to drain it again. Make sure that you do not damage or tip over the receiving container.
7. Place a collecting container under the oil filter.
8. Loosen the oil filter with a strap wrench. If the filter is very tight, pierce its metal housing with a sharp screwdriver (be careful, hot oil is leaking out) and unscrew the filter using a screwdriver.
9. Lightly lubricate the sealing ring of the new oil filter with component grease.
10. Do not use lubricating oil for this purpose, as it may be mistaken for leaking engine oil upon visual inspection.
11. Screw the filter tightly by hand without using any tools.
12. Wipe the drain plug clean and screw it on with a new sealing ring; but not too hard, otherwise you will damage the guide threads on the crankcase.
13. Fill with oil (see table).
14. Start the engine, check the oil for leaks.
