Warning: Prolonged skin contact with used motor oil is quite dangerous. Use barrier cream and wear gloves during this procedure. Change oil-soaked clothing immediately.
Warning: Frequent engine oil changes are the number one preventive maintenance procedure available to the amateur mechanic. Over time, the oil is susceptible to dilution and contamination, which leads to premature engine wear.
Engine oil can be pumped out using a special probe (available at petrol stations) through the oil dipstick tube. After that, it is usually necessary to fill the system with oil.
Do not dispose of used oil with household waste or in any other way. This may cause environmental pollution.
When changing the oil, it is advisable to attach a tag to the engine with the brand of oil and its viscosity.
The use of oils of various types adversely affects the operation of the engine. It is also not recommended to mix different brands of oils. Engine oils of the same type and brand, but of different viscosities, can be mixed if necessary, in particular in the off-season.
6.9 Unscrew the oil filter with a strap wrench or HAZET 2171-1. Gas engine.
Required tool:
- Inspection ditch or hydraulic lift with stands (if the oil is not being sucked out).
- Head for unscrewing the drain plug.
- Special tool for unscrewing the filter (filter key. Band wrench or tool HAZET 2171-1).
- Oil collection tank (if the oil is not being sucked out) with a capacity of at least 5 liters.
Necessary spare parts and consumables:
- Only if oil is not being sucked out: aluminum or copper O-ring for drain plug (sometimes supplied with an oil filter).
- Oil filter. The diesel engine requires an oil filter cartridge and two filter cover O-rings.
- About 4.5 liters of engine oil. Use AUDI approved oil, refer to Specifications.
Removal of impellent oil
1. Diesel engine: Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the oil filter housing cover. After that, the oil will flow out of the filter housing into the oil pan.
2. Remove the engine oil using a suction device through the oil level filler neck.
3. If an oil recovery device is not available, drain the oil. To do this, install the car on a horizontal platform.
Safety note
There is danger when lifting and placing the vehicle on stands! Therefore, first read the subsection car jacking.
4. Remove the bottom cover of the engine compartment, refer to subsection Removal and installation of the bottom cover of an impellent compartment.
5. Place a container under the oil pan to collect used oil.
6. Remove the drain plug from the oil pan and drain the oil completely.
Warning: If there is a large amount of metal chips and wear products in the used oil, this indicates the presence of scoring, for example, in crankshaft bearings and connecting rod bearings. To prevent damage after the repair, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the oil channels and hoses. In addition, it is necessary, if any, to replace the oil cooler.
7. Then it is necessary to screw in the drain plug with a new sealing ring. Do not exceed the tightening torques specified in the Specifications, otherwise this may lead to leakage and damage.
8. Lower the car onto its wheels.
Oil filter replacement
Gas engine
9. Unscrew the oil filter. A special tool is available for this, such as the HAZET 2171-1 band wrench. Collect the leaking oil with a rag.
10. Clean the oil filter flange at the cylinder block with fuel. If necessary, remove the remaining filter seal.
11. Coat the rubber o-ring on the new oil filter with a thin coat of clean engine oil.
12. Screw on the new oil filter by hand. If the filter seal is against the cylinder block, tighten the filter an additional 1/2 turn. Follow the instructions on the filter.
Diesel engine
13. Unscrew the cover -1- on the filter housing, for example, with a strap wrench or a VW-3417 key.
14. Replace the filter element -4- and the O-rings -2- and -3- on the filter cover.
15. Screw on the filter cover and tighten it to 25 Nm.
Refueling of impellent oil
16.
Warning: When starting the turbodiesel for the first time after changing the oil, it is necessary to ensure that the engine first runs at idle until the oil pressure warning lamp goes out. Only after reaching the required oil pressure can the gas be increased. If gas is given when the control lamp is on, the turbocharger may be damaged due to insufficient oil.
17. Open the cap and pour new oil into the filler neck of the cylinder head.
Warning: It is recommended to first add 0.5 l less oil. Warm up the engine and after a few minutes, using the pointer, check the oil level, top up if necessary. Remove excess oil, otherwise engine seals and catalytic converter may be damaged.
18. The oil level is normal if it is in the range (b). If the oil is in the range (A), oil must be added up to the marking (With) (refer to accompanying illustration).
19. After a test drive, check the tightness of the drain plug and oil filter, if necessary, carefully add oil.
20. 3 minutes after stopping the engine, check the oil level again, add or remove oil if necessary.
21. Establish the bottom cover of an impellent compartment, address to subsection Removal and installation of the bottom cover of an impellent compartment.
Oil filter replacement. Diesel engine.
Filler cap in the cylinder head cover.
The oil level must lie between the MAX and MIN·marks (in zone B).
