Warning: Prolonged skin contact with used engine oil is quite dangerous. Use barrier cream and wear gloves during this procedure. Change oil-soaked clothing immediately.

Warning: Frequent engine oil changes are the most important preventative maintenance procedure available to the amateur mechanic. Over time, oil is susceptible to dilution and contamination, leading to premature engine wear.

Engine oil can be pumped out using a special probe (available at gas stations) through the oil dipstick tube. After this, it is usually necessary to fill the system with oil.

Do not dispose of used oil with household waste or in any other way. This may cause environmental pollution.

When changing the oil, it is advisable to attach a tag to the engine with the oil brand and its viscosity.

The use of oils of different types has an adverse effect on engine operation. It is also not recommended to mix different brands of oils. Engine oils of the same type and brand, but of different viscosity, can be mixed if necessary, particularly in the off-season.

6.9 Unscrew the oil filter with a strap wrench or HAZET 2171-1. Petrol engine.

Necessary tool:

  • Inspection pit or hydraulic lift with supports (if the oil is not sucked out).
  • Head for unscrewing the drain plug.
  • Special tool for unscrewing the filter (filter key, Strap key or tool HAZET 2171-1).
  • Oil collection container (if the oil is not sucked out) with a capacity of at least 5 liters.

Necessary spare parts and consumables:

  • Only if oil is not sucked out: aluminum or copper sealing ring for drain plug (sometimes supplied with an oil filter).
  • Oil filter. For a diesel engine, an oil filter cartridge and two filter cover O-rings are required.
  • Approximately 4.5 liters of engine oil. Use oil approved by AUDI, refer to Specifications.

Removal engine oil

1. Diesel engine: loosen the mounting bolts and remove the oil filter housing cover. After this, the oil will flow out of the filter housing into the oil pan.

2. Remove engine oil using a suction device through the oil dipstick filler neck.

3. If there is no oil drain device available, drain the oil. To do this, place the car on a horizontal platform.

Safety Note

When lifting and placing the car on stands, there is a danger! Therefore, first read the subsection Jacking up a car.

4. Remove the lower engine compartment cover, refer to subsection Removal and installation the lower engine compartment cover.

5. Place a container under the oil pan to collect the used oil.

6. Remove the drain plug from the oil pan and drain the oil completely.

Warning: If the used oil contains large amounts of metal shavings and wear products, this indicates the presence of scoring, for example, in the crankshaft bearings and connecting rod bearings. To avoid damage after repairs, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the oil channels and hoses. Additionally, it is necessary, if any, to replace the oil cooler.

7. Then screw in the drain plug with a new sealing ring. Do not exceed the tightening torques specified in the Specifications, otherwise this may lead to a loss of seal and damage.

8. Lower the car onto its wheels.

Replacing the oil filter

Gasoline engine

9. Unscrew the oil filter. There is a special tool for this, for example, the HAZET 2171-1 strap wrench. Collect the leaking oil with a rag.

10. Clean the oil filter flange at the cylinder block with fuel. If necessary, remove the remaining filter seal.

11. Coat the rubber seal on the new oil filter with a thin layer of clean engine oil.

12. Screw in the new oil filter by hand. If the filter seal is flush with the cylinder block, tighten the filter an additional 1/2 turn. Follow the instructions on the filter.

Diesel engine

13. Unscrew the cover "1" on the filter housing, for example, with a strap wrench or a VW-3417 wrench.

14. Replace filter element "4" and sealing rings "2" and "3" on the filter cover.

15. Screw on the filter cover and tighten it to 25 Nm.

Filling engine oil

16.
Warning: When starting the turbodiesel for the first time after changing the oil, it is necessary to ensure that the engine first runs at idle speed until the oil pressure indicator lamp goes out. Only after the required oil pressure has been reached can the gas be increased. If the gas is applied when the indicator lamp is lit, the turbocharger may be damaged due to insufficient oil.

17. Open the cap and pour new oil into the cylinder head filler neck.

Warning: It is recommended to initially fill the oil 0.5 l less. Warm up the engine and after a few minutes, using the indicator, check the oil level, top up if necessary. Remove excess oil, otherwise the engine seals and catalytic converter may be damaged.

18. The oil level is normal if it is in the range (b). If the oil is in the range (a), oil must be added to the mark (c) (refer to the accompanying illustration).

19. After a test drive, check the drain plug and oil filter for leaks and carefully top up with oil if necessary.

20. After 3 minutes from stopping the engine, check the oil level again and add or remove oil if necessary.

21. Install the lower engine compartment cover, refer to subsection Removal and installation the lower engine compartment cover.
