When checking the oil level, the dipstick (1) removed from the guide tube. The oil level must be between the marks or in the grooved area (arrows) at the tip of the probe. The amount of oil to be added between the markings is 1 liter. The measurement can only be accurate if the vehicle is standing on a level surface.
Constant control
If you have just purchased your Audi A4 (new or used), for safety's sake, each time you fill the fuel tank, grasp the dipstick to measure the oil level. When you find out that your engine is using very little oil, then checks can be carried out between the second and fourth refueling.
According to Audi's instructions, the oil level should be checked at an engine temperature of 60°C, which corresponds to approximately 10 minutes after starting a cold engine.
Put the car on a horizontal surface.
After turning off a preheated engine, wait at least five minutes to allow all the oil to drain into the crankcase.
Be careful with a hot engine, you can burn your hand on parts located around.
Remove the dipstick, wipe it with a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel, re-insert it all the way, wait a while and remove it again.
On the rod you can see the oil level.
If the lubricant level reaches only the lower mark, then the engine oil must be topped up.
Tip: If you want to keep an accurate log of the oil consumption of your Audi A4, then you must always take measurements in the same place and at the same oil temperature.
By itself, the black color of the oil is not a signal to change the engine oil. The oil turns dark again even shortly after the change. Dropped dirt and abrasion products are kept in suspension so that they do not get inside the engine.
Topping up oil
The difference between the lower and upper markings on the dipstick for measuring the oil level is 1 liter. The oil level must not fall below the lower mark. The lack of a quarter liter of oil is not yet dangerous, but if there is not enough more oil and the Audi A4 is driven in a harsh manner, then the oil pressure can drop to a dangerous level when cornering.
Excess oil in the engine is also harmful. At high speeds, it can enter through the vent in the crankcase housing into the combustion chambers. For a catalytic converter, excess oil is as dangerous as unburned gasoline. Consequence: it can melt. But with normal oil consumption, this is not dangerous.
Bottom line: it is recommended to add oil when its level is in the lower quarter between the two marks on the dipstick. Do not fill oil above the upper mark.
Tip: Oil in small quantities is more expensive than in 3-, 4- or 5-liter canisters. For adding oil on the road, this kind of packaging is most often inconvenient. In addition, it takes up a lot of space in the trunk. A convenient 1-liter can of engine oil with a screw cap, from which you can add oil in small portions as needed.
Can oils be mixed?
You can safely mix all grades of oils from any manufacturer, including single-purpose and multi-purpose oils. This miscibility without detrimental effects is a basic requirement of international oil standards. Although mixing with a different engine oil may slightly affect the specific properties of a particular oil, as each brand of oil has its own combination of additives. But the lubricating effect is never compromised. If you adhere to the oil standards recommended by Audi, there is no danger of engine damage due to unsuitable oil.
