Activating the parking brake lever moves a rigid link under the vehicle floor forward. At its end is a rocker - a balancing bracket. Brake cables are attached to it, going back to the brake drum guards or to the brake disc calipers. The purpose of the balancing bracket is to distribute as evenly as possible between the rear wheels the force that is applied when the parking brake lever is tightened. Fluctuations in the coefficient of friction of both brake cables are balanced by the rocker arm.
On models with rear drum brakes, the actuating cables pull the rear brake shoe parking brake levers and press them against the drum. At the same time, the lever for engaging the parking brake system rests through the pressure rod on the front brake shoe. Thus, it also slows down.
On models with rear disc mechanisms, the brake cables act through the actuating lever, push rod and adjuster on the brake shoes in the manner described in section «Rear wheel disc brakes».
