Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence

The engine has been removed from the car
1. Remove the top cover 8 (see Fig. Camshaft Drive Parts) camshaft drive.
2. Unscrew the eight nuts and remove the cylinder head cover 11 (see Fig. Four-cylinder engine).
3. Remove the intake pipe and exhaust manifold.

4. Turn the crankshaft by the pulley so that the piston of the 1st cylinder is at the top dead center (TDC) of the compression stroke (both valves are closed). In this case, the mark on the crankshaft pulley coincides with the arrow on the lower cover of the camshaft drive, and the mark on the camshaft gear coincides with the mark on the upper cover of the camshaft drive (or with the upper plane of the cylinder head cover gasket on the left side of the engine), as shown in the figure.
5. Finally, unscrew nut 16 and remove belt tensioner 15.
6. Loosen the bolt securing the rear cover 10 of the camshaft drive to the cylinder head.
7. Loosen bolts 14 securing cylinder head 15. Loosen bolts evenly in the reverse order to that shown in Fig. Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence.
8. Remove the cylinder head.
9. Remove cylinder head gasket 7.
10. Install the cylinder head in the reverse order. In this case, it is necessary to replace the cylinder head gasket 7 and the cylinder head cover gasket 9. Gasket 7 must be installed on the cylinder block surface with the words "OBEN-TOP" facing upwards. Tighten the cylinder head mounting bolts in the sequence shown in Fig. Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence, in three stages: 1st stage – 40 N·m (4.0 kgf·m); Stage 2 – 60 N·m (6.0 kgf·m); Step 3 – tighten further by half a turn (180°).
Engine on a car
If it is necessary to grind or replace valves, remove carbon deposits from the combustion chamber walls, replace the cylinder head gasket, etc., you can remove the cylinder head without dismantling the engine from the car.
1. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Drain the fluid from the cooling system (see pp. 1–3 of subsection 4.1).
3. Remove the generator (see paragraphs 2–7 of subsection 12.1.3.1).
4.. Unscrew the muffler inlet pipe from the exhaust manifold (see p. 1 of subsection 5.1).
5. Remove the intake pipe and exhaust manifold.
6. Disconnect the high voltage wires and remove the spark plugs.
7. Disconnect the electrical wires, cables and hoses from the cylinder head, having previously marked them.
8. Remove the cylinder head (see The engine is removed from the car, pp. 1–9).
