Cylinder head — removal and installation (Audi 80 B3)

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Drain the cooling system as described in Section 2.

3. Remove the intake and exhaust manifolds (see Section 3), high voltage wires and spark plugs (Section 4).

4. Remove the camshaft and lifters as described in Chapter 11. Remove the generator (Section 12).

5. Unscrew the ground cable from the cylinder head.

6. Disconnect the heater hose, upper hose and bypass hose from the cylinder head.

7. Disconnect the electrical wiring from the temperature sensors.

8. Unscrew and remove the rear cover of the timing belt.

9. Loosen the cylinder head mounting bolts one turn at a time in the reverse order shown in Fig. 1.2.

10. Remove the cylinder head mounting bolts together with their washers.

11. Lift the cylinder head off the block. If it is stuck, loosen it with a wooden mallet. Do not pry into the gasket joint.

12. Remove the cylinder head gasket from the block.

13. Completely clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block.

14. Position the new gasket on the block with the words "OBEN TOP" facing up. Make sure the locating pins are in place.

15. Carefully lower the head onto the block. Do not use any compound when joining the cylinder head.



16. Insert the cylinder head mounting bolts together with their washers, tighten them by hand.

17. In the sequence shown in Fig. 1.2, tighten all bolts to the stage 1 torque given in Specifications. Then tighten them with the torque of stage 2 and finally turn them half a turn (180°) without stopping (twice 90° is acceptable).

18. Install the rear timing belt cover. Insert and tighten the bolts.

19. Reconnect the wiring to the temperature sensors.

20. Connect the heater hose, top hose and bypass hose.

21. Install the ground loop. Insert and tighten the bolt.

22. Install the generator (Section 12).

23. Install the camshaft and tappets as described in Chapter 11.

24. Install the high tension wires and spark plugs (Section 4), intake and exhaust manifolds (Section 3).

25. Fill the cooling system (Section 2).

26. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
