1. Remove the distributor (Section 4) and on carbureted models, the fuel pump (Section 3).
2. Remove the timing belt as described in Chapter 10, but do not remove the tensioner or sprockets from the camshaft and crankshaft.
3. Unscrew and remove the rear cover of the timing belt.
4. Unscrew the two bolts from the intermediate shaft seal flange. Remove the flange, take out the O-ring and the oil seal.
5. Remove the intermediate shaft from the block.
6. Clean the intermediate shaft, check its condition.
7. Lubricate the bearing journals on the intermediate shaft. Carefully insert the shaft into the block.
8. Lubricate the seal lip and outer rim of the new intermediate shaft seal. Place the seal flange on a bench and use a socket and mallet to tap the new seal into place.
9. Position the new O-ring on the flange. Install the flange on the block, insert and tighten the bolts to the torque specified in the Specification.
10. Use a micrometer to check the lateral clearance of the intermediate shaft and compare it with the data in Specifications.
11. Install the rear timing belt cover. Insert and tighten the bolts.
12. Install the toothed drive belt as described in Chapter 10.
13. Install the fuel pump (Section 3) and distributor (Section 4).
