2. Using a socket wrench, unscrew the bolts and remove the suction tube from the oil pump. Remove the O-ring.
3. Loosen and remove the large oil pump mounting bolts, then remove the pump from the block.
4. Loosen the two screws and lift up the cover. Note that the cover contains a pressure relief valve.
5. Clean the parts and check their condition.
6. Using a feeler gauge as shown (photo), check the backlash between the gears and compare it with the data in the Specifications. Similarly, check the side play of the gears using the edge of the ruler on the surface of the pump (photo). If the play is outside the specified limits, the pump must be replaced, otherwise - install the cover and tighten the bolts (photo).
7. Fill the pump with oil by submerging it in oil and turning the drive shaft.
8. Clean the mating surfaces, then place the oil pump against the block, insert the mounting bolts and tighten them with the specified tightening torque specification.
9. Position a new O-ring on the end of the suction tube. Install the tube on the oil pump, insert the bolts and tighten them with a tightening torque regulated specification.
10. Install the drip tray as described in Chapter 16.
