It is impossible to make an accurate diagnosis using the well-known "swinging" method when the car is swung by the wing and then released abruptly, because the spring movement may already be damped. This method is only applicable to determining a completely failed shock absorber.
An accurate picture of the condition of the shock absorber can be obtained on a special test stand, which is available in specialized workshops.
Diagnosing shock absorber faults
There are some clear symptoms of weakening shock absorber performance.
Unstable handling when the wheels do not have constant contact with the road.
After driving over uneven surfaces, the body sways.
the car "swerves" when turning, with the inner wheel not pressing hard enough against the road and the outer wheel not being sufficiently unloaded.
Intermittent braking distance under full braking.
Uneven and increased tire wear.
Traces of oil are visible on the outside of the shock absorber, under the spring plate of the shock absorber strut. Small leaks are considered normal.
Attention. Many front suspension parts can be removed and installed independently, but some operations require special equipment. Damaged suspension parts should not be straightened or welded, but should only be replaced with new ones.
