Removal and installation of a cable of a parking brake
When removing the parking brake cable, there are differences between 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive vehicles (Quattro).
Support the rear of the vehicle on stands and remove the rear wheels. Release the parking brake.
Remove the exhaust heat shield located next to the parking brake cable (4 attachment points). Quattro models have it too.
Loosen the parking brake cable tension on the adjuster. To do this, pull out the fastening clamp of the adjusting element and screw in the adjusting nut until it stops. The figure shows the required parts.
At the end of the cable, at the caliper, lift the spring clip shown in the figure and unhook the connecting nipple from the lever on the caliper. If the cable is to be reinstalled, the bellows must not be damaged. The illustration shows a vehicle with two front wheel drive. On the Quattro models, the cable enters from below and is fixed at the bottom and suspended at the top.
Now release the parking brake cable from the various attachments on the rear axle and body floor. To do this, you need to open the tin holders and pull out the cable and also squeeze it out of the mount with a screwdriver.
For Quattro models: Release the parking brake cable from the floor of the body and from the fuel tank. Attachment points are shown by arrows. In this case, auxiliary parts may fall out. They must not be re-installed.
Remove the heat shield on the final silencer and move it to the side (4 attachment points). Not so with the Quattro.
From inside the vehicle cab, remove the rear section of the center console. It's pretty tricky:
Tighten the parking brake lever and unscrew the small screw on the underside of the parking brake handle with a screwdriver and remove it. Now pull the handle forward.
Pull the parking brake lever cover forward and upward.
After removing the ashtray, unscrew the nut that appears.
Two covers are visible on the connection between the front and back. Pry them up. There are two bolts there. Unscrew them.
Separate front and back. By lightly pressing down, they move apart from each other.
Re-tighten the parking brake lever and pull the console forward without removing it completely, because. it still has one wire. Remove the plug from the fixing tabs.
Disconnect the parking brake cable from the equalizer lever and remove it.
Quattro: Unhook the parking brake cable from the guide on the rear axle. To do this, press the guide sleeve in the direction of the arrow and then remove the parking brake cable.
Proceed as follows when installing: Insert parking brake cable from below. On Quattro models, slide the cable far enough through the control arm until the guide sleeve snaps into place.
Take out all plastic parts on the equalizer lever. They must not be reused. Insert a screwdriver to lock the leveler arm in the middle position.
Slide the ball head through the equalizer arm and secure in the arm.
Reattach the parking brake cable to the floor of the body and to the rear axle (on the Quattro model and on the fuel tank) and connect the end of the cable to the drive lever. Insert fastener.
Adjust parking brake. Install the center console back in the reverse order of removal.
