The liquid in the battery consists of sulfuric acid diluted with distilled water. Some of this water may evaporate or disintegrate into hydrogen and oxygen during the charging process.
The Audi 100 is equipped with a so-called maintenance-free battery, which complies with DIN 72311 and has a relatively large water reserve. Under normal conditions, it should operate for its entire service life without adding new distilled water. Increased water consumption is caused only by high ambient temperatures, long stays in hot regions (vacation), a faulty alternator voltage regulator, self-discharge during long periods of parking, or deep discharge caused, for example, by parking lights being on all night.
The electrolyte in the battery should reach at least the lower mark on the case, applied with varnish or pressed out, but, at a minimum, well cover the upper edges of the plates.
If the fluid level is low, unscrew the plug.
If the battery is charged normally, then distilled water should be added to the upper mark or 15 mm above the upper edges of the plates.
If the battery is very discharged, add only enough water to cover the plates from above, as the liquid level will increase significantly when recharging.
Top up to the upper mark only after charging.
The amount of water from the filling bottle must be well dosed, because the battery can easily be overfilled.
An overfilled battery "boils" and acid comes out at the plug.
Removal the battery
Disable the anti-theft system and radio code so that they can be re-enabled after the battery is reconnected.
In cars without dust filter/air conditioning: black waterproof cover (at the back in the engine compartment) raise.
For vehicles with air conditioning/dust filter: Remove the rear seat by removing the two Phillips head screws.
For everyone: Always disconnect the negative cable first to prevent short circuits when working with the battery.
Loosen the nut on the negative wire terminal and disconnect the terminal from the "-" terminal.
Loosen and remove the positive cable clamp.
Unscrew the bolts of the mounting plate at the bottom of the battery, remove the bolts and the plate.
Disconnect the plastic hose from the central gas outlet.
Remove the battery.
When installing, connect the positive wire first, then the negative wire.
It is almost impossible to mix up the wire terminals without applying force, because the positive terminal is thicker than the negative terminal.
Don't forget to connect the hose from the central gas outlet.
Turn the alarm and radio back on.
Caring for battery contacts
Wash the crystals on the battery terminals with warm water and soda or treat with "Neutralon" from Varta.
Lubricate the leads and terminals of the wire with acid-proof plastic grease ("Ft 40v1" from Bosch).
Do not apply grease to the sides of the terminals or the inside of the clamps, otherwise there may be problems with the contacts.
