The five-cylinder in-line engine is installed in the car longitudinally with an inclination to the right. The engine cylinder block is cast iron without sleeves. The cylinder head is cast from an aluminum alloy. Valve seats and guide bushings made of special brass are pressed into the cylinder head. The camshaft is located in the cylinder head, which is driven by a toothed belt from the crankshaft. The same belt drives the water pump installed on the left side of the cylinder block.
At the rear end of the camshaft is the distributor drive gear. The camshaft also drives the fuel pump on carburetor engines.
The crankshaft is forged steel and rotates on six bearings.
The valves are actuated by the camshaft via tappets. Hydraulic tappets are installed on KU and NF engines.
The pistons are cast from aluminum alloy with steel inserts; each piston has two compression rings and one oil scraper ring.
The oil pump is installed in the front part of the cylinder block and is driven by the crankshaft. The oil filter is full-flow, installed on the right side of the cylinder block.
The WH model engines are equipped with a carburetor, while the KP, WC, KU, RT, NF model engines are equipped with a fuel injection system.
