Later models have an FEI contactless ignition system. This system is similar to the electronic ignition system described above.
It should be noted that two knock sensors are installed on later MC engines. The FEI system has «memory», which contains information about possible malfunctions of the ignition system. This information can «read» using special diagnostic equipment.
The following safety precautions must be observed when working with the FEI system:
- it is forbidden to touch the wiring, disconnect and connect it, connect any equipment to the wiring of the ignition system (including for diagnosing) with the engine running;
- if you need to turn the engine with a starter, disconnect the block from the ignition switch;
- cranking the starter with a charger is allowed no more than 15 s at a voltage not higher than 16.5 V;
- it is allowed to wash the engine only when the ignition is off;
- when performing welding work on a car, the battery must be completely disconnected;
- before towing the car, you need to disconnect the block from the ignition switch;
- it is forbidden to change the ignition distributor slider to another type of slider. The ignition timing is set by the ignition control unit, but it can be checked and adjusted as described earlier (cm. subsection 12.2.1.3), while disconnecting the vacuum hose from the ignition control unit.
