Removal
1. Apply the parking brake to the vehicle and place chocks under the rear wheels.
2. Remove the windshield washer reservoir and set it aside without disconnecting the hose.
3. Raise and support the front of the vehicle.
4. Loosen the mounting bolt and disconnect the steering damper from the bracket (non-power steering).
5. Loosen the bolts securing the steering rods to the steering rack.
6. Move the rods away from the steering mechanism by removing the bracket and pressure plate.
7. Loosen the bolt securing the lower steering column shaft clamp, move the clamp upward and disconnect the lower shaft from the steering gear drive shaft.
8. Remove the steering column shaft seal by pulling it out of the hole in the front shield.
9. Drain the fluid from the tank and disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses from the valve body (power steering).
10. Loosen the mounting bolts on both sides and remove the steering mechanism from the vehicle, removing it through the right wheel well.
Installation
1. Install the steering mechanism in reverse order.
2. Connect the steering rods (see subsection 9.6), replace the pressure plate with a new one.
3. Finally tighten the clamp mounting bolt to a torque of 25 N·m (2.5 kgf·m) after adjusting the gap between the steering wheel cover and the steering column switch cover (see subsection 9.2). Tighten the left steering gear housing mounting bolts to a torque of 20 N·m (2.0 kgf·m), and the right ones to a torque of 25 N·m (2.5 kgf·m).
4. On models with power steering, the hose feed bolt is tightened to a torque of 40 N·m (4.0 kgf·m).
5. After installing the steering gear, check and, if necessary, adjust the front wheel alignment at a service station. On models with power steering, bleed the system.
