The rear suspension is independent, lever-type with an elastic connecting crossmember, with longitudinal levers welded to the crossmember, with double-acting hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers, coil springs and a Panhard rod that takes lateral loads on the suspension.

The suspension arms are connected to the body brackets via rubber-metal hinges. On cars with a height-adjustable body, there is a stabilizer bar installed inside the rear suspension beam.

Shock absorbers

Double acting hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers.

Shock absorber brand: Boge.

Height adjustment of the body position

Some vehicles were equipped with a hydraulic height adjustment system on request.

The body position regulator system includes:
  • common with the power steering high-pressure piston pump. Idle speed, l/min: 0.3;
  • expansion tank.
  • two pressure accumulators (one on each side of the rear suspension). Filling pressure, kg/cm² - 15; maximum pressure, kg/cm²: ≥140;
  • regulating valve;
  • anti-roll bar.

Rear wheel alignment angles

The rear wheel alignment angles on a loaded vehicle, with normal tire pressure, and without excessive play in the rear suspension assemblies should have the following values:

  • camber: -30'±20';
  • maximum permissible difference in camber angle between right and left wheels: 30';

Toe-in of each wheel:
  • for vehicles with rear drum brakes with chassis number up to EA 085 288 +15'±10' or 1.60+1 mm;
  • for vehicles with rear disc brakes with chassis no. up to EA 082 448: ditto;
  • for vehicles with rear drum brakes with chassis no. starting from EA 085 289: +10'±5' or +1±0.5 mm;
  • for vehicles with rear disc brakes with chassis no. from EA 082 449: ditto.

Note: The rear wheel alignment angles are not adjustable.

Since January 1988, the rear track of the Audi "100" and "Avant" cars has become wider due to the installation of modified hubs, new brake drums or discs.

Rear track width, mm:
  • cars with drum brakes: 1481;
  • cars with rear disc brakes: 1482.

Rear wheel alignment angles (no load): Camber: -50'±30'.

Note: On vehicles equipped with the ABS system, bushings for mounting wheel speed sensors are pressed into the rear suspension beam.

On vehicles with 1989-1991 model year "RT" and "NF" engines, the rear wheel alignment angles on the vehicle in running order must have the following values:

collapse:
  • vehicles up to chassis no. 44 JN 201 030: -40'±30';
  • vehicles starting from chassis no. 44 JN 201 031: -50'±30';
  • maximum permissible difference in camber angle between right and left wheels: 30';

convergence:
  • vehicles with rear drum brakes up to chassis no. EA 085 288 and rear disc brakes up to chassis no. EA 082 448: +15'±10';
  • vehicles with rear drum brakes, starting with chassis number EA 085 289, and rear disc brakes, starting with chassis number EA 082 449: +10'±10',
  • maximum permissible difference in toe angle between right and left wheels: 25'.

Rear wheel hubs

The rear wheel hubs are mounted on two tapered roller bearings.

Since January 1988, the rear wheel hubs have been 6 mm higher than before, so the bearing surface of the wheel rim has been changed accordingly.
