The front suspension is independent, of the "swinging candle" type, with hydraulic shock absorber struts, coil springs, lower wishbones and a stabilizer bar that functions as a tie rod. The camber angle is negative.
Front suspension springs
| Color markings on springs | Car models |
| White | 4-cylinder cars with conventional suspension |
| Brown | 4-cylinder engine vehicles with larger diameter front suspension springs |
| Orange | 4-cylinder engine vehicles with reinforced suspension |
| Silver Yellow | Cars with 5-cylinder engines Cars with 5-cylinder engines in the "SO" version |
| Green | Cars with 5-cylinder engines with reinforced suspension |
| Blue | Cars with 5-cylinder engines in the "CD" version with reinforced suspension |
Shock absorbers
Double-acting hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers.
Brand: Volkswagen.
Anti-roll bar
Stabilizer bar diameter, mm: 23.
Front wheel alignment angles
The front wheel alignment angles are checked on the vehicle in running order with normal tire pressure, in the absence of excessive play in the steering and front suspension components and parts.

Front wheel hubs
The front wheel hub is mounted on a double-row radial thrust ball bearing.
Since January 1988, wheel hubs of vehicles with manual transmission have been equipped with flanges for installing bearings.
When installing, orient the bearing with the larger inner diameter toward the retaining ring. The bearing support surface in the steering knuckle must be free of grease.
The front wheel hubs of the new and previous designs are not interchangeable.
