The front suspension is independent, such as "swinging candle", with hydraulic telescopic shock struts, helical cylindrical springs, lower wishbones and a stabilizer bar (except for vehicles with FZ and EP engine models). The body of the telescopic strut is made integral with the steering knuckle.

From January 1, 1983, starting with chassis No.81 FA 180 414, a modified front subframe with serial No.893 199 313 B and new serial rubber-metal hinges were installed on the vehicles. The new type of rubber-metal hinges cannot be installed on front subframes with serial No.811 199 315. In addition, the bolt fastening of the stabilizer bar and the front subframe was changed.

Front suspension springs
  • Number of turns: 7.5.
  • Coil diameter, mm: 130.
  • Wire diameter, mm: 11.7.
  • Spring length under 100 kgf load, mm: 66.7.

Shock absorbers
  • Double-acting hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers.
  • Brand: Bitstein.

Anti-roll bar
  • Stabilizer bar diameter, mm: 21.

Front wheel alignment angles

The front wheel alignment angles are checked on the vehicle in running order with normal tire pressure, in the absence of excessive play in the steering and front suspension units and components, and should have the following values:
  • toe-in: 0°10'±10' or +1±1 mm;
  • camber: -0°40,±30' (-45'±30')*;
  • maximum permissible difference in camber angle between right and left wheels: 0°30';
  • longitudinal tilt angle of the pivot axis (for reference): 0°30'±30';
  • maximum permissible difference in the longitudinal angle of inclination of the steering axis between the right and left wheels: 0°30'.

*Since January 1983.
