Table of contents: Input shaft needle bearing ↓ Output shaft bearing ↓
1. Removal and installation of the clutch release mechanism installed in the gearbox housing are described in Section 5.
Input shaft needle bearing
2. Using a drift, knock the bearing out of the clutch housing. Install the new bearing so that the inscription on the bearing surface faces the drift used for installation. Insert the bearing into the hole from the gearbox side and, using a drift, drive it in until it is flush with the surface of the filler (photo).

Output shaft bearing
3. The outer bearing race is secured with a pin that fits into a slot on the outside of the bearing race (photo). Grasp the end of the pin and pull it out 3.2 mm so that the other end clears the bearing race. Use a drift to knock the outer race out of the housing. When installing a new outer race, align the slot on the outside with the pin, insert the race, flush with the casting surface, and insert the pin. Replacing a Roller Bearing Assembly - A Job for an Audi Dealer; the 3rd and 4th gears are rigidly mounted on the shaft and require a special tool to remove. When installing, the gears must be heated to 120°C.

Drive shaft flange seals
4. The drive shaft seals in the gearbox housing and in the final drive cover can be removed with a large screwdriver (photo).

5. Install new seals with the insulation protrusions facing inward (photo).

6. After installing the seals, lubricate the protrusion with transmission oil, fill the space between the protrusions with universal grease.
Input shaft seal
7. Remove the clutch release bearing as described in Section 5.
8. Remove the three bolts holding the guide bushing to the casing, remove the guide bushing and plate (photo).

9. Remove the seal (photo). If it is necessary to remove the bushing, it can be pressed out towards the clutch housing using a piece of tube of a suitable diameter.

10. Insert the bushing into the casing.
11. If the seal is installed on the input shaft, place a piece of plastic insulating tube or tape around the input shaft grooves before sliding the seal onto the shaft. This will prevent the grooves from damaging the seal. Lubricate the seal lips with gear oil. Tap the seal into place using a hammer and block.
12. Install the guide bushing and plate, tighten the bolts. If the guide bushing is plastic, it must be free of grease.
Starter bushing
13. The starter bushing is located in the clutch housing; if it is worn out, it must be replaced.
14. Insert the new starter bushing into the clutch housing.
