2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Unscrew and remove the upper bolts securing the gearbox to the engine, noting the location of the hangers.
4. Disconnect the speedometer drive cable from the differential housing (photo).

5. On models equipped with a cable-actuated clutch, separate the clutch cable from the transmission, see Section 5.
6. On models equipped with a hydraulically controlled clutch, remove the slave cylinder from the transmission, leaving the hydraulic hose connected, see. Section 5.
7. When working on the 016 gearbox, refer to Section 3, remove the air filter.
8. Remove the exhaust pipe from the manifold and exhaust system, see. Section 3.
9. Disconnect the wiring to the economizer, switch, and remove the cable clamp. Disconnect the additional transmission wiring, where available (photo).

10. Support the front of the engine with a winch.
11. Unscrew and remove the front gearbox cover.
12. Remove the starter as described in Section 4A.
13. Disconnect the drive shafts from the drive flanges, tie them together on one side.
14. Unscrew the retaining bolt securing the selector adapter to the gearshift rod on the rear of the gearbox (photo). Press the retainer rod out of the ball joint, remove the adapter from the selector lever. Remove the gearshift rod and, where applicable, the pushrod (016 gearbox).

15. When working on the 016 gearbox, remove the protective plates from the lower frame.
16. Support the gearbox with a jack.
17. Loosen and remove the lower bolts securing the gearbox to the engine.
18. When working on the 016 gearbox, remove the rear lower frame mounting bolts (photo).

19. Remove the bolts securing the gearbox mounts to the lower frame and, where necessary, remove the mounting brackets from the gearbox to release the lower frame (photo).

20. Remove the gearbox from the engine. Lower the gearbox to the floor and remove it from under the car.
21. Installation is carried out in the reverse order, lightly lubricate the input shaft grooves and the face of the clutch release bearing with molybdenum grease. Adjust the gearshift lever and rod, if necessary, as described in the relevant Chapters of this Section. Check the level and, if necessary, top up the transmission oil.
