2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Unscrew and remove the upper bolts that attach the gearbox to the engine, noting the location of the suspensions.
4. Disconnect the speedometer drive cable from the differential housing (photo).
5. On models equipped with a cable operated clutch, separate the clutch cable from the transmission, see Section 5.
6. On models equipped with a hydraulically controlled clutch, remove the slave cylinder from the transmission, leaving the hydraulic hose attached, see illustration. Section 5.
7. When working on 016 gearbox, referring to Section 3, remove the air filter.
8. Remove the muffler downpipe from the manifold and exhaust system, see Section 3.
9. Disconnect wiring to economizer, switch, and remove cable bracket. Disconnect the auxiliary transmission wiring, where available (photo).
10. Support the front of the engine with a winch.
11. Unscrew and remove the transmission front cover.
12. Remove the starter as described in Section 4A.
13. Separate the drive shafts from the drive flanges, tie them on one side.
14. Remove the retaining bolt securing the selector adapter to the shift rod on the rear of the gearbox (photo). Press the holder rod out of the ball joint, remove the adapter from the selector lever. Remove the shift rod and, where present, the pushrod (016 gearbox).
15. When working on 016 gearbox, remove the protective plates from the lower frame.
16. Support the gearbox with a jack.
17. Unscrew and remove the lower bolts attaching the gearbox to the engine.
18. When working on a 016 gearbox, remove the mounting bolts on the rear of the lower frame (photo).
19. Remove the bolts securing the gearbox mountings to the lower frame and, where necessary, remove the mounting brackets from the gearbox to free the lower frame (photo).
20. Remove a transmission from the engine. Lower the box to the floor and remove it from under the car.
21. Installation is carried out in the reverse order, lightly grease the grooves of the input shaft and the face of the clutch release bearing with molybdenum grease. Adjust the transmission control lever and traction, if necessary, as described in the relevant Chapters of this Section. Check the level and, if necessary, add gear oil.
