Removal
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery (see Chapter 3).
2. Apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the car and place it on axle stands.
3. Remove the lower engine protection plate.
4. Note the location of the two wires on the starter. Disconnect the wire from the solenoid relay, then unscrew the nut and disconnect the negative wire from the battery to the main terminal (see illustration).
5. Remove the bolt securing the starter bracket to the cylinder block, then remove the nuts and remove the bracket from the front of the starter. Note that one of the nuts secures the cable retainer bracket.
6. Remove the mounting bolts and lift the starter down away from the engine and transmission. Note that on some engines the lower mounting bolt cannot be completely removed from the transmission case because there is not enough space between the body and the underbody (see illustrations).
Installation
7. Install in the reverse order, tighten the mounting bolts with the tightening force specified Specifications.
