2. Place the generator on a clean work surface, pulley side down.
3. Loosen the mounting screws, then bend the brackets and lift the plastic cover from the back of the generator (see illustrations).
4. Loosen and remove the voltage regulator/brush holder assembly screws, then lift the assembly up (see illustrations).
5. Measure the length of the brush from the manufacturer's emblem (A), which is engraved on the side of the brush, to the curved end of the brush (B) (see illustration). Replace the unit if the brush is worn below the minimum limit.
6. Inspect the surfaces of the generator rings (see illustration). If they are excessively worn or burned, they should be replaced.
7. Assemble the generator in reverse order Chapter 5 install the generator.
