Withdrawal
1. Disconnect the negative cable (–) battery with the ignition off.
Warning: As a result, information is erased from the electronic memory units, such as the code of the radio receiver. Without a code, the radio can only be switched on by the manufacturer or an AUDI workshop. Therefore, read the materials of the subsection Entering the radio code.
2. Remove the V-belt, while referring to subsection Removing and installing the V-belt.
3. Remove the generator.
4. VALEO Generator: Disconnect the protective cover of the generator.
5. Disconnect the voltage regulator from the back of the generator and carefully remove it.
6. Replace the brushes if they are 5 mm or less in length. To do this, unsolder the wire.
7. Check the slip rings for wear and, if necessary, turn and grind them.
8. Clean the contact surfaces and check the tension of the contact springs, replace if necessary.
Installation
9. Insert brushes (A) and springs (IN) into the brush holder (WITH) and solder the wires.
10. To prevent solder from getting on the wires when soldering new brushes, hold the brush wires with pliers.
Warning: Solder intrusion will make the cable too stiff and the brush inoperable.
11. The insulating hose above the cable must be clamped near the soldering point along with the provided lug.
12. Check after installing new brushes for ease of movement in the brush holders.
13. Fasten the voltage regulator by hand with one bolt, then carefully press it into its final position and secure.
14. Attach the protective cover of the generator.
15. Install the generator in place.
16. Install the V-belt, while referring to subsection Removing and installing ribbed V-belt.
17. Attach the negative cable (–) to the battery.
Warning: Activate the automatic safety power windows, and also set the time and enter the radio code, while referring to the subsection Removing and installing the battery and subsection Entering the radio code.
