Models with 4-cylinder engine
1. Jack up the front of the car and support it on axle stands.
2. Loosen the three lock nuts on the pump pulley, remove the outer spacers and the outer half of the pump pulley.
3. Remove the drive belt from the pump pulley and crankshaft.
4. Check the condition of the belt, and replace if worn.
5. Before installing and adjusting the belt, first place all original shims on the pump flange uprights, along with the inner half of the pulley.
6. Install the drive belt on the crankshaft pulley and on the shims on the pump pulley, then place the outer half of the pulley on the stands.
7. Place spare shims on racks, install three pulley lock nuts.
8. Block the pulley from rotating and tighten the nuts so that the belt does not pinch between the two halves of the pulley.
9. Apply moderate pressure with your thumb on the belt midway between the crankshaft and pump pulleys. If the belt tension is correctly adjusted, the deviation should be approximately 10 mm. If the belt is moving, remove the outer half of the pulley, remove the shim, install the outer half and check the deflection again. If the belt is too tight, add spacer between the pulley halves using one of the spares. Attach spare spacers between the outer half of the pulley and the lock nuts.
10. After adjustment, lower the vehicle to the ground.
Models with a 5-cylinder engine
11. If the drive belt needs to be replaced, refer to Section 4A and remove the alternator drive belt.
12. Loosen the jam nut on the side of the governor lever (photo), loosen the pump mounting bolt.
13. Turn the tension bolt on top of the adjuster arm counterclockwise until the belt is free from the pump pulley. Remove the belt from the crankshaft pulley.
14. Check up a condition of a belt, replace if it is worn out.
15. To install and adjust the belt, slide it over the two pulleys, then turn the tension bolt clockwise. The tension is considered correct if the belt can be deflected approximately 10 mm with moderate thumb pressure at a point midway between the two pulleys.
16. After adjusting the tension, tighten the locknut and pump mounting bolt.
17. Where applicable, install the alternator drive belt as described in Section 4A.
