Models with 4-cylinder engine
1. Jack up the front of the car and support it on axle stands.
2. Remove the three pump pulley lock nuts, outer linings and outer half of the pump pulley.
3. Remove the drive belt from the pump pulley and crankshaft.
4. Check the condition of the belt and replace it if worn.
5. Before installing and adjusting the belt, first place all original shims along with the inner half of the pulley on the pump flange posts.
6. Install the drive belt onto the crankshaft pulley and onto the shims on the pump pulley, then place the outer half of the pulley onto the stands.
7. Place the spare shims on the stands, install the three pulley lock nuts.
8. Lock the pulley from rotating and tighten the nuts so that the belt does not get pinched between the two halves of the pulley.
9. Apply moderate pressure with your thumb on the belt midway between the crankshaft and pump pulleys. If the belt tension is correct, there should be approximately 10 mm of deflection. If the belt is loose, remove the outer pulley half, remove the shim, install the outer pulley half and check the deflection again. If the belt is too tight, add a shim between the pulley halves using one of the spares. Secure the spare shims between the outer pulley half and the lock nuts.
10. After adjustment, lower the vehicle to the ground.
Models with 5-cylinder engine
11. If the drive belt needs to be replaced, follow the Section 4A and remove the generator drive belt.
12. Loosen the lock nut on the regulator lever side (photo), loosen the pump mounting bolt.

13. Turn the tension bolt on the top of the adjuster arm counterclockwise until the belt is slack and off the pump pulley. Remove the belt from the crankshaft pulley.
14. Check the condition of the belt, replace it if it is worn.
15. To install and adjust the belt, place it over the two pulleys, then turn the tension bolt clockwise. The tension is correct if the belt can be deflected approximately 10 mm with moderate thumb pressure at a point halfway between the two pulleys.
16. After adjusting the tension, tighten the lock nut and pump mounting bolt.
17. Where applicable, install the alternator drive belt as described in Section 4A.
