Gearbox type 016
Until January 19th for Audi cars «100» a five-speed fully synchronized gearbox type 016 was installed with five gears forward and one reverse. The gearbox is integrated with the differential and final drive. Gear shifting is done by a lever on the floor of the body.
Gearbox type: 016 with P or W index.
Adjustment data
Axial clearance between the end face of the blocking ring and the end face of the toothed rim of the gear synchronizer, mm:
- I, II, III and IV gears:
- nominal: 1.00-1.70.
- minimum allowable (when worn): 0,50;
- 5th gear:
- nominal 1.00-1.90;
- minimum allowable (when worn) 0,50;
- reverse gear:
- nominal. 0.75-2.30;
- minimum allowable (when worn): 0,20.
Axial clearance of the synchronizer of I and II gears, mm: 0.00-0.04. Thickness of adjusting retaining rings, mm: 1.50-1.60 with an interval of every 0.05 mm.
Axial clearance of the synchronizer of III and IV gears, mm: 0.00-0.04. Thickness of adjusting retaining rings, mm: 1.50-1.62 with an interval of every 0.06 mm.
Axial clearance of the sliding gear of the 1st gear, mm: 0.10-0.40.
Axial clearance of the sliding gear of the IV gear, mm: 0.20-0.35. Thickness of adjusting rings, mm: 1.65-1.75 with an interval every 0.05 mm.
Axial clearance of gear III gear, mm - 0.00-0.04. The thickness of the adjusting retaining rings, mm - 1.65-1.75 with an interval of every 0.05 mm.
Axial clearance of gear IV gear, mm: 0.00-0.02. Thickness of adjusting retaining rings, mm: 2.24-2.40 with an interval of every 0.02 mm.
Gap between gears of II and III gears, mm: 0.10-0.35.
Adjustment of the distance between the end face of the final drive pinion and the axis of the differential is achieved by setting the adjusting rings S3 (see diagram page 91) between the pinion side taper roller bearing and the crankcase and S4 between the V gear side tapered roller bearing and the rear case cover.
Thickness of adjusting rings supplied as spare parts, mm:
- S3: 0.20-1.15 every 0.05 mm;
- S4: 0.24-0.93 every 0.03 mm.
In addition, 1.17 and 1.41 mm S4 shims are available as spare parts.
The preload of the differential bearings and the adjustment of the backlash in the meshing of the final drive gears are achieved by setting the adjusting rings S1 and S2. Thickness of adjusting rings supplied as spare parts, mm:
- S1: 0,15; 0,20; 0,50; 0,80; 1,00; 1.50;
- S2: 0.15, then from 0.20 to 1.00 every 0.10 mm, then 1.20.

Gearbox type 012
From January 1988 on Audi vehicles «100» four-speed gearboxes of type 014 were not installed. Five-speed gearboxes of types 013, 093 and 016 were replaced by a five-speed gearbox of type 012. and for gearbox type 016.
