4-speed automatic transmission*

4-speed automatic transmission*

The car is equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission with electronic control.

Shifting to higher and lower gears is carried out according to the driving programs stored in the memory.

Dynamic Switching Program (DSP)

Early shifting to higher gears and late shifting to lower gears ensures optimal fuel consumption.

The control device performs automatic program selection.

With a restrained driving style, the automatic system selects an economical shift program.

With a spirited driving style with sharp acceleration and frequent speed changes, using maximum speed or after sharply pressing the accelerator pedal, the automatic system operates in the range of sports programs. Late switching to higher gears allows the engine power reserve to be fully utilized. Switching to lower gears is carried out at higher engine speeds compared to the economical program.

Selecting the optimal driving program for specific conditions is a continuous process. However, regardless of this, you can switch to a more sporty program by pressing the accelerator pedal sharply. In this case, the gearbox switches to a lower gear corresponding to the actual speed of movement, providing the possibility of dynamic acceleration (for example, when overtaking) without the need to press the accelerator pedal sharply to the stop. After switching back to a higher gear and with the appropriate driving mode, operation is restored according to the original program.

The mountain program controls the gear selection on uphill and downhill gradients. This eliminates the need to shift gears when driving uphill. Pressing the brake pedal when driving downhill shifts to a lower gear. This allows engine braking without having to shift manually.

Selector lever lock

Automatic selector lever lock

When the ignition is on, the selector lever is locked in the "P" and "N" positions.

To move it from these positions, press the brake pedal. This prevents the inadvertent engagement of the drive gear and the spontaneous movement of the car from the spot.

As a reminder to the driver, when the selector lever is in the "P" and "N" positions, the display on the instrument panel shows "WHAT IS A NEEDED FUEL DRIVE?" (when selecting the stationary vehicle driving mode, press the brake pedal). In addition, the symbol shown at the top lights up on the gear shift lever.

At speeds of approximately 5 km/h and above, the selector lever lock in the "N" position is automatically released.

Lock button

Lock button

The selector lever lock button prevents unintentional gear engagement. When this button is pressed, the selector lever is unlocked.

The illustration shows in red the positions in which you must press the lock button.

Locking the key in the ignition switch

After turning off the ignition, the key can only be removed from the lock when the selector lever is in position "P" (parking lock).

After removing the key from the lock, the selector lever is locked in the "P" position.

Selector lever position

Selector lever position

When the ignition is on, the instrument panel displays the actual position of the selector lever. This illustration shows position "D".

R parking lock

The drive wheels are locked. The parking lock can only be used after the vehicle has stopped.

R reverse gear

Reverse gear can only be engaged after the vehicle has stopped and the engine is idling.

When the ignition is on and the selector lever is in the "R" position, the reversing lights come on.

N neutral position (idle position)

Set the selector lever to this position only during long breaks in driving.

D basic position when moving forward

Shifting to higher and lower forward gears is carried out automatically, depending on engine load, speed and program.

When driving, under certain conditions it may be preferable to temporarily move the selector lever to one of the positions described below.

3 position for driving on hilly roads

This position is recommended for frequent shifting from 3rd to 4th gear and back, when the selector lever is in the main position "D".

4th gear is locked. This slightly increases the braking effect of the engine when the accelerator pedal is released.

2 position for driving in the mountains

This position is suitable for overcoming long descents and ascents.

3rd and 4th gears are locked. This will avoid useless upshifting and increase the engine braking effect.

1 position for overcoming steep slopes

This position is recommended for overcoming climbs and descents with an exceptionally large longitudinal profile gradient – especially when driving with a trailer.

The car moves only in 1st gear. This achieves the maximum braking effect of the engine.

Warning: When downshifting manually, the selector lever can be set to positions "3", "2" and "1". However, the automatic transmission will only switch after it is no longer possible to increase engine speed incrementally.

Kick-down device

The Kick-down device allows for maximum acceleration. When the accelerator pedal is pressed sharply and the resistance point is crossed, the automatic system switches to a lower gear depending on the engine speed and revolutions. Switching to the next higher gear occurs only when the maximum engine speed is reached.

Operating instructions

Starting the engine

The engine can only be started when the selector lever is in the "N" or "P" position. See also subsection Ignition switch and engine start.

Selecting a driving mode

Always press the brake pedal before selecting a driving mode with the vehicle stationary and the engine running.

When shifting gears before starting off, do not press the accelerator pedal.

If you accidentally shift the lever to the "N" position while driving, release the gas and wait until the speed drops to idle before returning to the desired driving mode.

Warning: Regardless of the selected driving mode, when the engine is running, hold the car with the foot brake, since even in idle mode the kinematic connection between the engine and the wheels does not completely disappear - the car "crawls".

Warning: When the vehicle is stationary and in drive mode, do not add gas under any circumstances (for example, with your hand in the engine compartment). Otherwise, the car will immediately start moving, possibly even with the handbrake applied.

Before starting work with the engine running, move the selector lever to position "P" and apply the handbrake.

Moving off

Turn on the desired driving mode. Wait until the automatic system switches on, creating a power connection between the gearbox and the drive wheels (at the moment of switching on, a slight jolt is felt). Only after this add gas.

Stop

During short stops, for example at traffic lights, there is no need to switch to neutral position "N". It is enough to hold the car with the brake. However, the engine should only run in idle mode.

Parking

When stopping on level ground, it is enough to engage the parking lock. If the road has a slope, first apply the handbrake and then engage the parking lock. This reduces the load on the locking mechanism and makes it easier to disengage it later.

Emergency program

In case of a system malfunction, the automatic system switches to the emergency program. This is indicated by all segments on the indicator board lighting up/going out at once.

Depending on the driving situation, the connection between the gearbox and the drive wheels can be interrupted. When the engine is subsequently started and the vehicle is moving (selector lever in position "P" or "N"), the connection between the gearbox and the drive wheels is restored by moving the selector lever to the desired position. However, in position "D", 3rd gear will be engaged in any case. If more traction is required, (for example, in the mountains, when driving with a trailer) you can start moving when the selector lever is in position "1".

It is also possible to engage reverse gear.

Warning: If the transmission switches to emergency mode, contact an Audi service center as soon as possible.

Tiptronic*

Tiptronic*

The car is equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission with electronic control.

In order to reduce fuel consumption and protect the environment, on some modifications the transmission is designed so that the maximum speed of the car is achieved only in 4th gear.

Shifting to higher and lower gears is carried out according to the driving programs stored in the memory. There is also the possibility of manual gear shifting (manual shift program).

Dynamic Switching Program (DSP)

The control device switches programs automatically.

With a restrained driving style, the automatic system selects an economical shift program.

Early shifting to higher gears and late shifting to lower gears ensures optimal fuel consumption.

With a temperature-sensitive driving style with sharp accelerations and frequent speed changes, using maximum speed or after sharply pressing the accelerator pedal, the automatic system operates in the range of sports programs. Late switching to higher gears allows the engine power reserve to be fully utilized. Switching to lower gears is performed at higher engine speeds compared to the economical program.

The mountain program controls the gear selection on uphill and downhill gradients. This eliminates the need to shift gears when driving uphill. Pressing the brake pedal when driving downhill shifts to a lower gear. This allows engine braking without having to shift manually.

Manual shift program

Manual shift program

To switch to manual mode, press the selector lever from position "D" to the right. You can switch to manual mode both while driving and while parked. When manual mode is engaged, the display shows the gear engaged "5, 4, 3, 2, 1".

When the selector lever is moved forward (+), the transmission switches to higher gears. When moved back (–), the transmission switches to lower gears.

When accelerating in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears, the transmission will automatically shift to the next higher gear shortly before reaching maximum engine speed.

When switching from a higher gear to a lower one, the automatic transmission will switch only after it becomes impossible to increase the engine speed in a variable manner.

When the Kick-down device is operating, the transmission shifts to a lower gear depending on the vehicle speed and engine speed.

Sports steering wheel "Tiptronic"*

The buttons located on the steering wheel allow manual gear shifting.

Of course, it is also possible to change gears using the selector lever on the centre console.

When the manual shift program is activated, the buttons on the steering wheel are illuminated.
