1. Due to the self-adjusting action of the rear brakes, handbrake adjustment is only necessary after replacing the brake pads, or after removing and installing any handbrake component.
2. To adjust the handbrake, jack up the rear of the car.
Models with rear drum brakes
3. Release the handbrake.
4. From underneath the vehicle, loosen the handbrake cable mounting nut in the cable compensator (photo).

5. Press and release the brake pedal once.
6. Move the handbrake lever to the third notch on the ratchet.
7. Tighten the cable adjusting nut until both rear brakes grab, but you can still rotate the drums by hand.
8. Release the handbrake, the rear drums should rotate freely.
9. Lubricate the threads of the mounting nut and the compensator with universal grease.
Models with rear disc brakes
10. Remove both rear wheels, handbrake should be fully released.
11. From underneath the vehicle, tighten the handbrake cable mounting nut in the compensator (Photo 19.4) until the brake control levers on both rear calipers rest against the stops (Fig. 9.23).

12. Now loosen the handbrake adjusting nut two full turns.
13. Use a screwdriver to spread the handbrake control lever on the left caliper so that it rests against the stopper (Fig. 9.22 and 9.23). Lock the lever in this position, the control lever on the right caliper should also rest against the stopper. If not, loosen the cable adjusting nut until both levers stop against the stoppers.

14. Lubricate the threads of the mounting nut and the compensator with universal grease, install the wheels and lower the vehicle.
