2. Block the front wheels, then jack up the rear of the vehicle and support it on axle stands. Remove heat shield where used.
Rear drum brakes
3. Fully release the handbrake.
4. Under the vehicle, loosen the cable retaining nut on the arm rod until it is free from the equalizer bar.
5. Fully depress the brake pedal once.
6. Tighten the handbrake lever two notches.
7. Tighten the mounting nut until the rear wheels can be turned by hand.
8. Release the handbrake and check that both rear wheels turn freely.
9. Apply the handbrake and lower the vehicle to the ground.
Rear disc brakes
10. Follow the procedure described in Chapter 10, paragraphs 24-28.
11. Tighten the mounting nut on the handbrake lever linkage until the control arm on each caliper rests against the stop. This will require the help of another person.
12. Loosen the mounting nut two full turns.
13. Use a screwdriver to raise the handbrake lever on one of the rear calipers to the stop. Now repeat the procedure on the opposite caliper and check that the first lever should remain on the limiter. If not, the handbrake cable is adjusted too much, loosen the adjustment nut as necessary.
14. Fully apply and then fully release the handbrake and check that both rear wheels turn freely.
15. Apply the handbrake and lower the vehicle to the ground.
