1. Usually there is no need to adjust the handbrake, since the rear brakes (drum and disc) - self-adjusting. Adjustment will only be required after replacing handbrake parts or drum brake linings, or if the cables have stretched.
2. Block the front wheels, then jack up the rear of the car and support it on axle stands. Remove the heat shield where used.

3. Release the handbrake completely.
4. Under the vehicle, loosen the cable retaining nut on the control arm rod until it is free from the equalizer rod.
5. Press the brake pedal fully once.
6. Tighten the handbrake lever two notches.
7. Tighten the lug nut until the rear wheels can no longer be turned by hand.
8. Release the handbrake and check that both rear wheels rotate freely.
9. Apply the handbrake and lower the car to the ground.
Rear disc brakes
10. Perform the procedure described in Chapter 10, paragraphs 24-28.
11. Tighten the retaining nut on the handbrake lever rod until the control lever on each caliper hits the stop. This will require the help of another person.
12. Unscrew the fastening nut two full turns.
13. Using a screwdriver, lift the handbrake lever on one of the rear calipers up to the stop. Now repeat the procedure on the opposite caliper and check that the first lever remains on the stop. If not, the handbrake cable is adjusted too much, loosen the adjustment nut as necessary.
14. Fully apply and then fully release the handbrake and check that both rear wheels rotate freely.
15. Apply the handbrake and lower the car to the ground.
