Safety can be ensured by following these rules:
- To avoid the possibility of fire and injury, always disconnect the negative battery cable unless repairs or inspections require battery voltage to be applied.
- The fuel system pressure must be relieved before disconnecting any component in the system (injector, fuel line, pressure regulator, etc.) or fuel line connections.
- Pay special attention to preventing fuel from coming into contact with your skin, face, and eyes when working with the fuel system. Be aware that fuel under pressure can penetrate the skin.
- Always wrap a rag around a fuel connection before loosening it to soak up any fuel that may leak out. If fuel spills onto the engine, clean it up immediately.
- All rags soaked in fuel must be stored in a special container. When working with the fuel system, have a dry fire extinguisher nearby.
- Do not allow fuel or fuel vapors to come into contact with an open flame. When loosening and tightening fuel line connections, always support them with a second wrench. This will prevent unwanted mechanical stress and deformation of the fuel lines.
- Always use the tightening torques specified in the technical data.
- Always replace damaged O-rings on fuel connections with new ones. If a fuel pipe is installed at any point, it must not be replaced with a hose.
Relieving fuel system pressure
Modern fuel injection systems operate under high pressure. This makes it necessary to relieve the pressure before making repairs.
Disconnect power from the fuel pump by removing the relay or fuse (fuse) fuel pump. Check against the diagram on the fuse box. The fuse can be pulled out to stop the fuel pump. The engine should idle. Wait until the engine stalls from lack of fuel.
Carefully loosen the fuel line at the pressure regulator or component being repaired. Wrap a clean rag around the connection to prevent fuel from spilling.
After completing the repair, remove the rag soaked in fuel and connect the wire to the negative terminal of the battery. Replace the relay or fuse.
