Security can be ensured by observing the following rules:
- To avoid the possibility of fire and personal injury, always disconnect the wire from the battery negative, except when repair or inspection requires battery voltage to be applied.
- Depressurize the fuel system before disconnecting any component in the system (injector, fuel line, pressure regulator, etc.) or fuel line connections.
- Pay special attention to prevent fuel from getting on the skin, face and eyes when working on the fuel system. Be aware that pressurized fuel can penetrate the skin.
- Always wrap a rag around a fuel system connection before loosening it so that the rag will absorb any fuel that may leak out. If fuel spills onto the engine, remove it immediately.
- All rags soaked with fuel must be stored in a special container. Have a dry fire extinguisher nearby when working on the fuel system.
- Do not allow fuel or fuel vapors to come into contact with an open flame. When loosening and tightening fuel line connections, always support them with a second wrench. This will avoid unwanted mechanical stresses and deformations of the fuel pipes.
- Always use the tightening torques specified in the technical data.
- Always replace damaged fuel system O-rings with new ones. If a fuel pipe is installed anywhere, it must not be replaced by a hose.
Relieving Fuel System Pressure
Modern fuel injection systems operate under high pressure. This makes it necessary to relieve pressure first before making repairs.
Disconnect power from the fuel pump by removing the relay or fuse (fuse) fuel pump. Check according to the diagram on the fuse box. The fuse can be pulled out to stop the fuel pump. The engine must be running at idle. Wait until the engine stalls from lack of fuel.
Carefully loosen the fuel line on the pressure regulator or on the part being repaired. Wrap a clean rag around the connection to prevent spillage of fuel.
After the repair is completed, remove the rag soaked in fuel and connect the wire to the AB minus. Replace the relay or fuse.
