This job is relatively easy to do on 4- and 5-cylinder models. When working on a 6-cylinder engine, special tools will be needed for the final installation of the timing belt.

Remove the upper part of the timing belt guard (see earlier in this chapter).

Set the crankshaft to the TDC position of the ignition moment of the first cylinder (also see above in this chapter).

Remove the toothed pulley. When loosening the bolt, hold the gear with a crossbar (for example, cross beam 3036). When working on a 6-cylinder engine, loosen the timing belt gear with a puller (see "Replacing the timing belt").

Remove the cylinder head cover.

Loosen the timing belt (see "Timing Belt Tension") and remove from the camshaft toothed pulley.

Remove the additional vacuum pump for the brake booster from the cylinder head (5 cylinder engine only).

For a 6-cylinder engine, unscrew the Hall sensor housing on the left cylinder head.

4- and 5-cylinder engines: crosswise, first unscrew bearing caps 1 and 3 (looking from the front), then bearing caps 2 and 4.

6-cylinder engine: crosswise, first unscrew bearing caps 2 and 3 (looking from the front), then 1 and 4.

When installing, pay attention to the following:

4- and 5-cylinder engines: install the camshaft so that the eccentrics at the first cylinder point evenly upwards.

6-cylinder engine: Install the camshaft so that the locking plate faces its large hole towards the opposite cylinder head.

All types of engines: The bearing cap hole is not in the middle: pay attention when installing.

Install the camshaft bearing cap onto the corresponding bearing according to the marking.

4- and 5-cylinder engines: first tighten bearing caps 2 and 4 crosswise in turn, then bearing caps 1 and 3. Tightening torque: 20 Nm.

6-cylinder engine: first tighten bearing caps 1 and 4 in a crisscross pattern, then bearing caps 2 and 3. Tightening torque: 20 Nm.

4- and 5-cylinder engines: Tighten the camshaft timing pulley (if removed) to 65 Nm. Installation position: the wedge on the camshaft matches the groove in the timing pulley hole.

6-cylinder engine: Install the camshaft gear with the locking plate, tighten to 70 Nm.

All engine types: be sure to check the valve timing adjustment (see above).

After installing the camshaft, do not start the engine for 30 minutes to allow the hydraulic tappets to reach the desired position.

First turn the engine over manually.
