If this system does not function, then the cause may be a malfunction of the engine control device and, above all, the mechanical camshaft adjuster. However «culprit» there may be a corresponding solenoid valve, so this valve needs to be checked.
Checking the camshaft control solenoid valve
1. If the valve does not activate (e.g. during testing via a one-minute connection to the VAS 5051 diagnostic, measurement and information system or the VAG 1551 flaw detector), which manifests itself as the absence of a click, then in this case it is necessary to check the internal resistance of the valve.
2. To do this, turn off the ignition. Remove the connector (arrow) from the camshaft adjuster.

3. To measure the valve resistance, connect a multimeter to the valve. The measurement is made between two contacts that are located next to each other. The nominal value is from 10 to 18 ohms.

4. If the nominal value is provided, the power must be checked. This assumes a good fuse A on the quad relay panel in the electronics box located in the battery section, as well as the fuel pump relay J17. To do this, check the fuse, relay and relay power.
5. If the fuse and relay are good, connect a voltage indicator (VAG 1527 B) between motor housing and pin 1 (plus) previously removed plug connection of the camshaft adjuster.

6. Operate the starter for a short time. The indicator LED should light up. If the LED does not light up, it is necessary to check for an open connection: connector pin 1 - fuse - fuel pump relay. In case of a break, fix it. If the LED lights up after the break has been repaired, check the power supply,
7. To do this, connect a voltage indicator between connector pins 1 and 2. Apply voltage to the camshaft control valve (best with the diagnostic system VAS 5051). The LED should flash.
8. If the LED does not blink or is constantly on, you need to check for an open or short to ground connection from pin 2 (e.g. with control device VAG 1598/31). The LED should flash. If the wiring is good, the motor control must be replaced. If no fault is found, the mechanical camshaft adjuster must be replaced.
