Table of contents: Driving in winter ↓ Fuel injection system repair ↓
The fuel system includes: fuel tank, fuel hoses, high-pressure fuel pump with injectors and fuel filter. The fuel consumption meter shows the driver the corresponding amount of fuel in the tank. If you drive with an empty tank, there is no need to bleed the system, as it is automatically bled when the engine is started.
Caution: If the fuel system is not automatically bled or there is no hand pump, then proceed as follows: fill the high-pressure fuel pump with diesel fuel; fill the fuel tank with diesel fuel; tow a car.
The above measures ensure that the system is quickly de-aerated.
Caution: To check whether fuel is supplied to the injectors at starting speed, unscrew the union nuts on two injectors and start the engine without preheating until fuel begins to flow out of the union nuts. Tighten the union nuts and start the engine according to the instructions.

Driving in winter
In a diesel engine, you cannot add fuel additives, but you must do so in winter. When the outside temperature drops, the fluidity of diesel fuel decreases due to paraffin deposition. Diesel fuel becomes thick. For this reason, mineral oil companies offer winter fuel additives that improve its fluidity and guarantee normal vehicle operation at temperatures down to -15°C. It is not always possible to achieve perfect engine operation with these additives. Therefore, even if there is "summer diesel fuel" in the tank, gasoline should be added to it. Additives should be added before paraffin deposition begins. Otherwise, the filter and fuel hoses should be cleared of thick diesel fuel.
Since adding gasoline (normal gasoline) reduces engine power, then only the amount that is really necessary should be added (see table).
Attention. Normal gasoline should be added to diesel fuel, do not use "Super" gasoline. Due to high flammability, gasoline should be added to the fuel tank. Moreover, gasoline should be poured first, and then diesel fuel.
Note: Adding gasoline will reduce engine power.
If the engine stops in very cold weather due to strong thickening of diesel fuel, it will be very difficult to start it again. The following options are available for starting the engine in such a case:
- Remove the fuel filter and heat it in a water bath until the diesel fuel becomes liquid again.
- Remove the fuel filter and replace it with a new one.
- Place or tow the vehicle into the garage and heat the garage.
- Pour hot water over the fuel injection system.
Caution: Never heat the fuel injection system or fuel tank with a blowtorch or similar. Risk of explosion!
Fuel injection system repair
When repairing the fuel injection system, it is necessary to maintain thorough cleanliness and strictly follow the following rules:
Clean connected and adjacent parts thoroughly before unscrewing.
Place the removed parts on a clean surface and cover them with paper or foil. Do not use rags that leave fibers!
Open hoses, pipes, etc. should be carefully protected or plugged unless they require immediate repair.
Install only clean parts.
Remove spare parts from their packaging only immediately before installation.
Do not use parts that have not been packaged (for example, in a toolbox).
With an open system:
- Use compressed air.
- Do not move the car.
In addition, care must be taken to ensure that diesel fuel does not come into contact with the coolant hoses. If this happens, the hoses must be cleaned. Damaged Hoses (reacted) should be replaced.
